What is computer system validation (CSV) in a remote job context?

Computer system validation (CSV) is a process used to ensure that IT systems and software used in regulated industries (such as pharmaceuticals or healthcare) work as intended and comply with relevant regulations. In a remote job context, CSV professionals perform validation tasks, documentation, and system testing from an offsite location, often collaborating with teams via digital tools. This remote work typically involves reviewing validation protocols, writing reports, and ensuring compliance with standards like FDA 21 CFR Part 11, all while leveraging secure online platforms to communicate and manage documentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer System Validation (CSV) professional working remotely, and why are they important?

To excel as a Computer System Validation Remote professional, you need a solid understanding of regulatory compliance (such as FDA 21 CFR Part 11), risk management, and validation lifecycle processes, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with validation software, quality management systems (QMS), and documentation tools is typically required, along with certifications like GAMP or Six Sigma being advantageous. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure validated systems meet compliance standards, minimize risks, and support seamless collaboration in a regulated, distributed environment.

What is the difference between Computer System Validation Remote vs Computer System Validation on-site?

AspectComputer System Validation RemoteComputer System Validation on-site
Work EnvironmentPerforms validation tasks remotely, often from home or a different location from the client site.Works directly at the client or company site, conducting validation activities in person.
Required CredentialsTypically requires certifications like GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, and validation experience, applicable in both settings.Same certifications as remote roles, with additional familiarity with on-site equipment and facilities.
Industry UsageCommon in industries like pharmaceuticals and biotech where remote oversight is feasible.Traditional in regulated industries requiring on-site validation activities.

Both roles require similar certifications and industry knowledge, but the main difference lies in the work environment—remote versus on-site. Remote validation offers flexibility, while on-site validation involves direct interaction at the facility.

What are some common challenges faced by Computer System Validation professionals working remotely, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Computer System Validation (CSV) professionals often encounter challenges such as coordinating validation activities across distributed teams and ensuring secure access to sensitive documentation. Effective communication and use of collaborative tools are crucial for managing documentation reviews, test execution, and issue resolution. Establishing clear validation protocols and regular virtual check-ins with cross-functional teams can help maintain compliance and project momentum. Additionally, leveraging secure cloud-based validation platforms can streamline approvals and maintain data integrity while working remotely.

Summary:

The HRIS & Reporting Specialist serves as the functional owner and subject matter expert for the organization’s Workday platform, responsible for HR system configuration, reporting, data governance, and ongoing system optimization. This role ensures Workday effectively supports HR operations while maintaining high standards of data integrity, security, and compliance.

Reporting to the Global HR Operations & Services Leader, the position partners closely with HR, Finance, Payroll, and Corporate IT to translate business requirements into scalable system solutions. While Corporate IT manages technical integrations and infrastructure, this role oversees functional configuration, security setup, reporting development, testing coordination, and continuous system enhancements within HR. The ideal candidate brings strong Workday expertise, solid knowledge of HR processes, and a structured, governance-focused approach to HRIS administration.

Key Responsibilities:

Own Workday Functional Architecture & Configuration

  • Serve as subject matter expert across all Workday modules including Core HCM, Compensation, Benefits, Absence, Talent, Payroll, Time Tracking, and Reporting.
  • Architect and configure business processes, security roles, condition rules, notifications, calculated fields, and validation controls.
  • Lead the documentation of business requirements and articulate end-to-end functional process design for enhancements and new initiatives.
  • Provide thought leadership on system capabilities, including a clear understanding of delivered functionality and configuration limitations.
  • Partner with Corporate IT and external vendors on integrations, defining functional requirements and leading testing validation.

Lead Release Management, Testing & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain awareness of Workday’s product roadmap and upcoming releases; assess impact to current configuration and proactively plan enhancements.
  • Own release governance including regression testing, unit testing, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and pre-launch validation.
  • Create and execute detailed test scripts across development and production environments.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline manual processes through automation and system optimization.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives aligned with scalability and operational excellence.

Design Advanced Reporting & Workforce Analytics

  • Build and maintain sophisticated dashboards and reports that support executive decision-making, workforce planning, compensation cycles, compliance reporting, and operational metrics.
  • Develop advanced calculated fields and custom reporting solutions.
  • Ensure reporting accuracy through routine audits and validation controls.
  • Partner with stakeholders to define dashboard needs and enable self-service analytics capabilities.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for business leaders.

Establish Security & Data Governance Standards

  • Own Workday security configuration, role-based access controls, and periodic security audits.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy and regulatory standards (PII, GDPR, SOX as applicable).
  • Maintain strong data governance protocols including routine data audits and quality assurance reviews.
  • Serve as an escalation point for system issues while exercising discretion with highly confidential employee information.

Support HR Operations & Employee Experience

  • Enable compensation cycles, open enrollment, organizational changes, and global workforce transactions within Workday.
  • Support mass data processing activities (EIB loads, restructures, large-scale updates).
  • Develop SOPs, documentation, FAQs, and quick reference guides to support user adoption.
  • Provide training and change management support when rolling out new functionality.
  • Foster a customer-centric mindset by delivering timely, accurate system support.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience with Workday functional configuration across multiple HCM modules.
  • Experience with cross-functional Workday administration, including security configuration, business process framework (BPF) management, and reporting architecture.
  • Proven experience managing Workday release cycles, including regression testing, user acceptance testing (UAT), and unit testing.
  • Advanced Workday reporting expertise, including development of calculated fields and dashboards.
  • Experience performing mass data uploads using Enterprise Interface Builder (EIB) and troubleshooting system issues.
  • Strong understanding of HR operations, processes, and applicable compliance requirements.
  • Experience supporting multi-country employee populations preferred (U.S., U.K., and Canada).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in a lean, fast-paced environment with a high level of ownership and accountability.
  • Demonstrated integrity and discretion when handling sensitive and confidential employee data.
