What is a computer system validation CSV?

A Computer System Validation (CSV) job involves ensuring that computerized systems used in regulated industries, such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices, comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA 21 CFR Part 11, GxP). CSV professionals develop validation protocols, conduct testing, and document system performance to ensure data integrity, reliability, and compliance. Their role is critical in maintaining system quality and avoiding regulatory risks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in computer system validation CSV?

To thrive as a Computer System Validation (CSV) professional, you need a solid understanding of computer science, regulatory compliance (such as FDA 21 CFR Part 11), and validation methodology, often supported by a degree in a scientific or technical field. Familiarity with documentation tools, validation protocols, and quality management systems, as well as certifications like PMP or Six Sigma, is highly beneficial. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills enable effective cross-functional collaboration. Mastering these skills ensures accurate validation processes, regulatory compliance, and smooth project execution in highly regulated environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by computer system validation CSV professionals and how are they addressed?

Computer System Validation (CSV) professionals often encounter challenges such as keeping up with evolving regulations, managing complex documentation requirements, and ensuring robust communication between IT, quality assurance, and business teams. Navigating system upgrades while maintaining compliance with strict regulatory standards requires careful planning and thorough risk assessment. Successful candidates address these challenges by staying current with industry guidance, utilizing validation templates and checklists, and fostering strong teamwork across various departments. Building collaborative relationships and maintaining meticulous records help ensure both audit readiness and smooth project completion.

Is computer system validation a good field?

Computer System Validation (CSV) is a specialized field within regulated industries like pharmaceuticals and biotech, focusing on ensuring software and systems meet compliance standards such as GxP. It offers opportunities for professionals with skills in quality assurance, validation protocols, and regulatory requirements, often requiring certifications like GAMP or 21 CFR Part 11 knowledge. The field provides stable employment with growth potential, especially as compliance regulations become more stringent.

Job description

Step into a career with ASM, where cutting edge technology meets collaborative culture.
For over 55 years ASM has been ahead of what's next, at the forefront of innovation and what's technologically possible. With more than 4,500 ASMers representing 70 nationalities, our people and our advanced semiconductor devices are playing a crucial role in trends such as 5G, cloud computing, AI, and autonomous driving. But we're more than just a tech company. We value diversity, inclusion and sustainability as we strive to make a positive impact on the world. Our development programs help support your growth, shaping your future and pushing the boundaries of innovation to unleash potential.
Job's mission
We are seeking a motivated Systems Engineer I to support software-driven automation tools for semiconductor equipment and field-service workflows. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer with strong software fundamentals who is comfortable working close to hardware, robotics, cameras, HMIs, measurement tools, databases, and production/service environments.
The engineer will help develop and maintain local applications, diagnostic tools, HMI workflows, data pipelines, automation tools, and supporting software used by engineering, manufacturing, field service, and cleanroom/cleanhouse partners. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Python and/or C/C++, user interface development, basic networking, data handling, and troubleshooting systems in lab or deployed environments.
This role requires curiosity, attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to take ownership of assigned technical tasks while learning in a cross-functional engineering environment.
What you will be working on
  • Develop and maintain software applications, diagnostic tools, and HMI interfaces for semiconductor equipment, lab fixtures, robotic tools, and field-service workflows.
  • Build operator-facing workflows that are reliable, readable, and easy to use on PCs, HMIs, tablets, or other equipment-connected interfaces.
  • Develop frontend/UI and backend logic using Python GUI frameworks, web UI tools, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS, APIs/local services, configuration files, logging, and error handling.
  • Integrate software with robots, cameras, sensors, measurement devices, motion systems, and industrial equipment.
  • Support basic equipment networking, including setting device IP addresses, understanding subnets, and connecting PCs/HMIs to robots, cameras, and controllers.
  • Build responsive application workflows using threading, synchronization, asynchronous execution, or queue-based updates so long-running robot, camera, measurement, or communication tasks do not freeze the HMI/operator interface.
  • Support databases and data pipelines for measurement results, equipment records, part data, reports, analytics, model inputs/outputs, and traceability.
  • Support data-driven and AI/ML workflows where applicable, including feature extraction, model integration, similarity scoring, quality/health checks, prediction outputs, and engineering analytics.
  • Create and maintain scripts, tools, installers, documentation, validation notes, and test procedures needed to support applications in lab, production, or customer-adjacent environments.

What we are looking for
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in Python for application development, automation, scripting, debugging, data handling, or equipment integration.
  • Experience with C/C++ or other lower-level programming languages is helpful for debugging, device integration, or performance-critical workflows.
  • Experience developing user interfaces, dashboards, diagnostic tools, HMIs, or local software applications.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, Python UI frameworks, or similar frontend/HMI technologies.
  • Familiarity with backend application logic, APIs/local services, configuration files, logging, error handling, and software testing.
  • Familiarity with databases or structured data using SQL, SQLite, JSON, Excel/CSV, NoSQL, or similar tools.
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts such as IP addresses, subnets, ports, and local equipment connectivity.
  • Exposure to robotics, cameras, sensors, motion systems, measurement devices, machine vision, or industrial equipment is preferred.
  • Exposure to AI/ML or data science tools such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, NumPy, pandas, or similar frameworks is preferred.
  • Experience with threading, synchronization, asynchronous programming, event loops, or queue-based UI updates is preferred.
  • Experience with software packaging and deployment tools such as PyInstaller, NSIS, virtual environments, PowerShell, Git, GitLab, CI/CD pipelines, or Microsoft Azure is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially when debugging systems that combine software, hardware, data, and operator workflows.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and work effectively in a cross-functional engineering environment.
