Corning's Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.

Scope of Position:

Join Corning's Environmental Technologies (CET) Division as a Vision System Intern within the Measurements and Controls Group. In this role, you will help design, prototype, test, and deploy computer vision systems that improve manufacturing process efficiency and quality. Your work will focus on prototyping vision solutions and collaborating with senior engineers to transition technologies from development to pilot lines and manufacturing.

Day to Day Responsibilities
  • Contribute to engineering projects developing vision systems for inspection, defect detection, and measurement.
  • Develop, train, and evaluate models for object detection, segmentation, using Halcon and deep learning frameworks. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Set up and calibrate cameras and sensors for reliable data capture.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across hardware and software during development and deployment.
  • Support on-floor trials, data collection, and performance assessments to drive iterative improvements.
  • Document technical processes, system requirements, test plans, and project progress for internal stakeholders.
Travel Requirements
  • 0 - 20% travel
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time
  • 40 hrs/week
  • Expected to work hours required to successfully deliver project and support requirements.
Requirements
  • Pursuing a bachelor's Master's or PhD's degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Robotics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 0-1 years of experience through coursework, labs, projects, or internships in robotics or automation. 
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C#(strongly preferred).
  • Understanding of image processing fundamentals, linear algebra, and 2D/3D geometry; experience with camera calibration.
  • Basic understanding of robot kinematics, dynamics, and feedback control.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware (cameras, sensors, actuators, and embedded controllers).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Availability for a 10-week internship during Summer 2027, with an expected graduation date of December 2027 or later
  • Interest in pursuing a full-time opportunity with Corning after graduation, if offered
  • Willingness to work at the posted location
Desired Experience/Skills
  • Experience with image processing tools such as Halcon and OpenCV.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and AI technologies. Experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch;
  • Exposure to 3D vision (stereo, point clouds).
  • Experience integrating vision with robotics or automation systems.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or lab automation setting is a plus.

  • Problem-Solving: Analytical skills to identify and resolve challenges.
  • Adaptability: Flexible in adjusting to changing project demands and technologies.

The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
