What is computer software engineering?

Computer software engineering is a branch of engineering focused on designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications and systems. Software engineers use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to create software that meets user needs. They often work on everything from mobile apps to large-scale enterprise systems, collaborating with other engineers, designers, and stakeholders. The field requires continuous learning due to rapidly evolving technologies and methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer software engineer?

To thrive as a Computer Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid foundation in computer science, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with development tools, integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and sometimes certifications in specific languages or frameworks are important. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability help engineers collaborate effectively and respond to evolving project needs. These skills ensure the successful design, implementation, and maintenance of reliable, efficient software solutions.

What are some common challenges computer software engineers face when working on large-scale projects?

Computer software engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with cross-functional teams, managing complex codebases, and ensuring consistent documentation. Navigating these challenges requires strong communication skills, effective use of version control systems, and familiarity with agile methodologies. Additionally, engineers must balance meeting project deadlines with maintaining code quality and adapting to evolving requirements, making time management and adaptability crucial skills in this role.

Job description

Description:

About TrackVia

TrackVia is an enterprise application platform headquartered in Denver, Colorado. We help enterprises and government organizations build the operational systems they run their business on — applications that move work, data, and decisions across teams. We serve mid-market, enterprise, and federal customers, and we are pursuing GovRAMP authorization to deepen our presence in the public sector.

We are an engineering-first organization. Our teams ship in cross-functional pods, lean heavily on AI in our development workflow, and value high trust and low process. We are scaling thoughtfully — adding leaders who can build durable programs alongside the people who already run the platform.

Salary Range: $180K - $200K annually plus bonus

Benefits

  • Medical, Dental, Vision (100% employee premiums paid)
  • Flex PTO
  • 13 Paid Holidays
  • 401k matching
  • Hybrid Work (Downtown Denver office with paid parking)
  • Paid Parental leave

The Opportunity

We are hiring a Director of Engineering to lead our software development and quality assurance teams. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives at the intersection of people management and technical delivery — someone who can build a high-performing team, establish predictable delivery cadences, and partner closely with product, infrastructure, and the executive team to ship great software.

You will own the engineering org day-to-day: hiring, growing, and retaining talented developers and QA engineers, coordinating work across squads, and ensuring the team delivers with quality and consistency. This is the right role for an experienced engineering leader who wants meaningful scope and the opportunity to shape how a scaling SaaS company builds and ships software.

Requirements:

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and manage all software developers and quality assurance engineers, including direct management of team leads and senior individual contributors
  • Partner with Product to translate roadmap priorities into well-scoped, executable engineering work
  • Drive quality across the organization — establish QA standards, automated testing practices, and a culture of engineering excellence
  • Build and maintain a healthy, high-trust team environment through regular 1:1s, performance feedback, career development, and hiring
  • Identify and reduce bottlenecks in the development lifecycle — delivery velocity, code review throughput, deployment pipelines, and incident response
  • Collaborate with infrastructure and DevSecOps to ensure engineering teams have the tooling and platform support they need to ship safely and quickly
  • Contribute to engineering strategy, architecture decisions, and technical roadmap alongside the CTO
  • Support GovRAMP and compliance posture by ensuring engineering practices meet security and audit requirements
  • Build a scalable engineering organization — hiring plans, team structure, onboarding, and internal process as we grow

What You’ll Bring

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent experience considered
  • 7+ years of hands-on software development experience and 5+ years in an engineering management or leadership role at a SaaS or cloud company (some overlap is acceptable, but candidates should bring meaningful depth in both)
  • Demonstrated experience managing software developers and QA engineers in a cross-functional, product-driven environment
  • Strong command of modern software delivery practices — agile/scrum, CI/CD, code review workflows, and release management
  • Track record of improving delivery predictability and engineering throughput without sacrificing quality or team health
  • Experience hiring, growing, and retaining engineering talent in a competitive market
  • Strong written and verbal communication — able to represent engineering clearly to product leadership, executives, and customers
  • Hands-on technical background sufficient to participate meaningfully in architecture conversations and code review discussions
  • Sound judgment about technical tradeoffs, prioritization, and when to slow down vs. accelerate delivery

Nice to Have

  • Experience leading engineering at a SaaS platform serving enterprise or government customers
  • Familiarity with GovRAMP, FedRAMP, or SOC 2 compliance requirements as they intersect with engineering practices
  • Background in full-stack development with our core stack: React, Node, Java, Spring, Hibernate, MySQL, AWS, and Kubernetes/EKS
  • Experience integrating AI-assisted development tooling — Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar — into engineering workflows
  • Prior experience scaling an engineering org through a period of significant growth or platform modernization

Team & Reporting

This role reports directly to the CTO and is a member of the senior leadership team. You will partner closely with product management, infrastructure, DevSecOps, and security leadership. The Director of Engineering carries direct people management responsibility for all software developers and QA engineers at TrackVia, with input into hiring plans, team structure, and compensation decisions.

Location & Work Style

This role is based in Denver, Colorado, with a hybrid work model. We expect this leader to be in our Denver office 2–3 days per week — for team collaboration, planning sessions, partnership with cross-functional peers, and team-building. Candidates who require fully remote arrangements are unlikely to be a fit for this specific role.

How to Apply

Send your résumé and a brief note describing a software delivery challenge you have personally led through — what the situation was, how you approached it, and what changed under your leadership. We read every application.

TrackVia is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a team that reflects the breadth of perspectives in the communities we serve, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
