Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Research Assistant within the Physics division. This position will support the Physics Division's High Energy Physics by assisting with the programming and development of quantum circuits for a joint project with the University of Tokyo. Responsibilities include supporting computational research activities, maintaining documentation, and assisting with project related technical tasks.

You will:
  • Assist in programming and development of quantum circuits for high energy physics applications.
  • Validate quantum circuits against tensor network simulations and exact calculations.
  • Execute quantum circuits on quantum computing hardware and document results.
  • Perform routine computational and technical research procedures in support of project objectives.
  • Maintain accurate records of programming activities, experimental procedures, and research findings.
  • Assist in analyzing and verifying data for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to established methodologies.
  • Identify and report deviations, errors, or inconsistencies in computational results to the supervisor.
  • Assist with preparation, testing, and maintenance of software tools and research workflows.
  • Follow established research protocols, technical procedures, and data management practices.
  • Provide completed work results, summaries, and technical updates directly to the supervisor.

We are looking for:
  • B.S. in Physics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with computers, scientific computing, and programming languages.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member to accomplish project goals.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions regarding scientific and technical procedures under close supervision.
  • Attention to detail and ability to recognize deviations from established procedures or expected results.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation of research activities and findings.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working in a research laboratory or technical research environment is preferred.

This is a full-time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Salary range: The expected hourly range for this position is $23.97 - $26.69, which fits into the full hourly range of $23.97 - $34.86 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities. This includes education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • Background check: This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
