Computer Science Product Manager information

Can you be a product manager with a CS degree?

A computer science degree is common among product managers, as it provides technical knowledge useful for understanding software development and collaborating with engineering teams. However, successful product managers also need skills in communication, project management, and user experience, which can be gained through experience or additional training. Many employers value a combination of technical background and business or leadership skills for this role.

What is the difference between Computer Science Product Manager vs Software Engineer?

Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The main difference is that a Computer Science Product Manager focuses on defining product vision, strategy, and coordinating between teams, while a Software Engineer primarily develops and implements software solutions. Both roles require a strong technical background, but their responsibilities and focus areas differ significantly.

Is computer science dead due to AI?

As a Computer Science Product Manager, it is clear that computer science remains a vital field despite advances in AI. AI tools and algorithms are built on core computer science principles, and demand for software development, data analysis, and system design continues to grow. Professionals with skills in programming, machine learning, and systems architecture are essential for developing and maintaining AI technologies.

Do PMs become CEOs?

Product Managers (PMs) can progress to executive roles such as CEO, especially if they develop strong leadership, strategic, and business skills. However, becoming a CEO typically requires broad experience across multiple functions, including operations, finance, and marketing, beyond product management. Many CEOs have backgrounds in various roles, but PMs with leadership and strategic expertise can pursue executive pathways over time.

Can I make 200K with a computer science degree?

Computer Science Product Managers can potentially earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with significant experience, leadership skills, and working in high-paying industries or companies. Salary levels depend on factors such as location, company size, and individual expertise, with senior roles often exceeding this threshold. Certifications and proficiency in tools like data analysis or project management can also influence earning potential.

We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace that attracts exceptional talent and to supporting our employees to succeed at all levels. We dream in over 35 languages and share one mission: to engineer experiences that amaze.
Role Overview
This role is responsible for defining and delivering HP's Edge AI strategy focused on supporting Computer Vision and Multi-Modal inferencing workloads.
As a Senior Product Manager, you will develop the vision, roadmap, and definition of an integrated hardware, software, and services solution within HP's broader Edge & AI solutions organization. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical fluency in AI tools and workflows, balances strategic thinking with hands-on execution, and communicates effectively across technical and executive audiences.
Success in this role is defined by HP's ability to expand its Edge AI footprint by enabling AI inferencing workflows, focused on computer vision and multi-modal use-cases, across manufacturing, healthcare, and retail environments.
This position is located in Fort Collins, Colorado; or Houston, TX.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
  • Own end-to-end outcomes by driving cross-functional alignment across engineering, GTM, and operations teams to ensure coordinated delivery of Edge AI solutions.
  • Define the vision, strategy, and roadmap for an Edge AI solution that enables HP to expand its footprint and compete for leadership in the rapidly growing Edge AI market.
  • Define an integrated hardware, software, and services solution that supports Computer Vision and Multi-Modal AI workloads in edge deployments, including back-office and branch locations.
  • Drive platform and solution requirements, including base hardware capabilities, to support development, deployment, and scalable operation of Edge AI solutions.
  • Partner with peer product managers and engineering teams to communicate feature prioritization, timelines, and acceptance criteria, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Engage directly with ISVs, customers, and ecosystem partners to validate real-world workflows and accelerate time-to-value through pilot and scaled deployments.
  • Support product marketing and sales teams with Go-to-Market strategy development, product positioning, and sales enablement materials.
  • Define and track success metrics related to adoption, reliability, usability, and overall platform impact.

Experience knowledge & skills
  • Proven experience (10+ years) delivering Computer Vision solutions and/or Multi-Modal AI applications.
  • Experience working with edge or distributed systems, including devices, fleets, or on-prem deployments.
  • Experience working with Python-based ecosystems and developer tooling.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to engage effectively with diverse teams and articulate ideas at the executive level.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and project management processes.
  • Prior experience with artificial intelligence, machine learning, or deep learning
  • Prior experience in enterprise solutions development

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, Data Science, or related fields.
  • MBA and/or Advanced degrees in AI-related fields are highly preferred.

The pay range for this role is $147,050 to $230,850 USD annually with additional opportunities for pay in the form of bonus and/or equity (applies to United States of America candidates only). Pay varies by work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Benefits:
HP offers a comprehensive benefits package for this position, including:
  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Long term/short term disability insurance
  • Employee assistance program
  • Flexible spending account
  • Life insurance
  • Generous time off policies, including;
