Job description

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) designs, manufactures, and installs world-class products and solutions for use in critical infrastructure, making electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical. SEL is hiring a Firmware Engineering Manager for our R&D Communications product group. In this role, you will develop and support our Satellite Synchronized Network Clocks and Precise Time product line.

As a Firmware Engineering Manager, a typical day may include the following:

Serving as technical lead on complex embedded Linux firmware projects. Performing management activities to attract, hire, supervise, and develop individual contributors to meet the goals of the group. Managing and breaking down a backlog of tasks for the team. Creating and maintaining internal design documentation. Writing test plans and developing test procedures. Preparing design and system level specifications. Participating or moderating peer reviews of designs, documentation and test plans. Providing and maintaining accurate project plans and labor estimates. Working closely with product managers on new product concepts, enhancements and long-term strategy. Engaging with cross-discipline teams to deliver world-class products for critical infrastructure. Modeling, teaching, and applying SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles. Understanding. Creating. Simplifying. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science,Electrical Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 8+ years of engineering or management experience in embedded Linux/RTOS firmware development using C/C++

  • Demonstrated ability to design/produce/support successful products/processes

  • Strong desire to develop employees and lead projects

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and mentor others

  • Ability to rapidly learn new skills and assume new responsibilities

  • Strong writing, technical documentation and speaking

  • Background check results satisfactory to SEL

  • Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Supervisory experience or training

  • Strong project management knowledge and skills

  • Experience with the following tools:

    • Software development tools (Confluence, Jira, Bitbucket, Jenkins,etc.)

    • Source control (Git,Mercurial, etc.)

    • Test automation& scripting (GoogleTest, Ctest, Behave, Python Unittest, Bash, etc.)

    • Modern communications protocols (Ethernet, TCP/IP, etc.)

    • Cybersecurity best practices (CVE analysis, threat modeling, etc.)

Pay Range Data

We anticipate filling this position as an Engineering Manager I $136,000 - $201,000 per year. We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job and responsibility. We base our starting pay offer and title on job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
