Job Description
The Engineering and Computer Science Librarian is a critical member of the Syracuse University Libraries' Subject Instruction Team, situated within the Department of Research and Scholarship. They ensure that the Libraries collections and instructional services support the academic and research needs of students, staff, and faculty in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) related academic programs and research centers. The Librarian provides essential services, including reference assistance, instruction, and collection development, and serves as the Libraries point of contact for ECS.
As a member of the Subject Instruction Team, the Librarian supports faculty and students through curriculum-based instruction, workshops, and programming, and fosters collaborative relationships with faculty to support instruction in research methods, identifying and assessing relevant source material, citation management, and other information literacy skills. The Librarian provides specialized instruction that addresses the unique needs of learners with varying skills, abilities, and learning styles. The Librarian continuously assesses instructional services to ensure they meet the evolving expectations of faculty, students, staff, and the University community.
Education and Experience
Required qualifications:

• MLS (ALA-accredited) or equivalent combination of education and experience
• 1+ year of experience working in an academic library
• Reference and instruction experience, preferably in an academic library environment
• Demonstrated interest in engineering, computer science, or other STEM-related disciplines
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting and contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment

Desired qualification:

• Undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline.
• 1+ year of experience serving patrons in STEM disciplines.
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and instruction, with an interest in developing research skills and/or information literacy instruction and engaging learning experiences.
• Experience planning and delivering instruction, workshops, programs, or lesson plans in an academic, library, or educational setting.
• Experience supervising student workers.
• Working knowledge of AI research services related to artificial intelligence for research, teaching, and learning.

Librarian Rank and Compensation
This position will be appointed at the Assistant Librarian, Senior Assistant Librarian, or Associate Librarian without Permanent (ranking) Status ranks based on the successful candidate's qualifications.

Final salary will be commensurate with experience and assigned rank.
Assistant Librarian - Candidates may be appointed to this rank if they have little or no professional experience. It has a maximum of three terms before they are expected to apply for promotion to the next rank (Sr. Assistant Librarian). Requirements for this rank include:

• MLS or equivalent degree, as appropriate to the position.
• Additional academic preparation and/or related professional library experience if required by the position.

Senior Assistant Librarian - Candidates may be appointed to this rank if they have successful professional experience. It has a maximum of three terms before they are expected to apply for promotion to the next rank (Associate Librarian). Requirements for this rank include:

• MLS or equivalent degree.
• Successful professional library experience.
• Demonstrated competence in position responsibilities.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Evidence of professional growth and initiative.

Associate Librarian without Permanent (Ranking) Status - Candidates may be appointed to this rank if they have substantial professional achievement and commitment. Librarians hired at the Associate rank will be required to apply for permanent (ranking) status, which signifies sustained achievement and contributions to Syracuse University Libraries. Requirements for this rank include:

• MLS or equivalent degree.
• Show excellent/outstanding performance in previous library roles.
• Demonstrate significant contributions to library operations.
• Provide evidence of professional commitment (such as committee work, conference attendance, publications, or professional development activities).

Responsibilities
Liaison Reference, Instruction, and Collection Development

• Provide in-depth subject reference and consultation services in assigned disciplines through in person consultation and digital modes of communication.
• Develop and provide specialized online and in-person information literacy instruction for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff in assigned disciplines in conjunction with the Libraries' Information Literacy Program.
• Create and maintain subject-related information and instructional materials. Participate in the marketing, development, implementation, assessment, and provision of outreach programs for Libraries services.
• Select materials in coordination with Collection Development and Analysis Librarians and perform other relevant discipline-specific collections activities as needed.
• Create, deliver, and evaluate instructional and consultative services related to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and emerging technologies that advance research, teaching, and learning.
• Creating instructional materials, teaching workshops, and consulting faculty/staff/students on AI practices on topics such as prompt engineering, machine learning libraries, computational linguistics, and research methods.

Subject Instruction Team

• Supports team programming through the coordination and delivery of research roundtable workshops and other instructional initiatives that advance research skills and information literacy across the University.
• Develops, coordinates, and delivers workshops and programs that support research skills for students at all levels, both within engineering and computer science and across disciplines.
• Partners with the Graduate School and other University units to deliver outreach and plan and deliver research-related instruction, workshops, and programming, including dissertation bootcamp and graduate student orientation.
• As a member of the subject instruction team and in conjunction with the Libraries¿ Information Literacy Program, develop and provide University information literacy instruction. Contributions may include providing library instruction for WRT 105, WRT 205, and other general courses.
• Share best practices related to information literacy with other members of the Department of Research and Scholarship.
• May supervise or share oversight of the Subject Instruction Team student employee.

Liaison Outreach

• Serve as liaison librarian to the College of Engineering and Computer Science
• Develop professional relationships with faculty, researchers, staff, and administration in appropriate schools, colleges, and departments to assess and respond to research and teaching needs.
• Interpret and communicate findings obtained from patron outreach to SU Libraries stake holders using well-defined library communication channels.

Professional Development and Service

• Participate in interdisciplinary library teams as assigned and work collaboratively and creatively to implement and enhance programmatic services that benefit the University.
• Engage in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the university, and the library profession.
• Maintain awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices through research and activities that increase one's knowledge and abilities, and that positively impact one's performance and service contributions.
• Maintain knowledge of engineering, computer science, and technical information specific skills, tools, and best practices.
• Maintain awareness of evolving AI tools, AI research and policies to inform best practices in library services.
• Maintain knowledge of best practices for providing engaging library programming.
