What is a Computer Science Intern job?

A Computer Science Intern is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, or other computing fields. Interns typically assist with coding, debugging, research, and testing while working under the guidance of experienced professionals. This role helps build technical skills, industry knowledge, and networking opportunities, preparing interns for full-time positions in the tech industry.

What kind of projects and tasks can I expect as a Computer Science Intern?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as writing and testing code, debugging software, supporting ongoing development projects, and collaborating on team-based assignments. Interns often contribute to designing features, fixing bugs, conducting research, or assisting in quality assurance under the guidance of senior engineers or mentors. The exact nature of your projects may vary based on the company and team, but you will typically gain hands-on experience with real-world software development tools and workflows. This exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand agile work environments and best practices, making it a valuable step toward a full-time role in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer Science Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), data structures, algorithms, and basic software development principles, typically backed by ongoing coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes exposure to cloud platforms or coding certifications can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, initiative, and the ability to work well within a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that interns can quickly contribute to projects, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate effectively with experienced professionals.

Job description

Known for our innovative components, Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America manufactures autonomous-ready infotainment and ADAS solutions, premium audio systems, high-definition displays, and powertrain electronics for standard, electric, and hybrid vehicles. Since 1979 we have served the major automotive, heavy-duty truck, and coach manufacturers across the US, and continue to grow each year!   Be a part of a select team that is making a real impact on the automotive mobility of tomorrow!

Summary

Work closely with experienced professionals in their chosen field to apply what is learned in the classroom to real-life work situations. Under supervision, they will assist team members or directly perform day-to-day departmental functions and projects. They will gain an enhanced understanding of their field and the automotive manufacturing industry, laying the foundation for a successful career.

Responsibilities
  • Research, benchmark, and test implementations of state-of-the-art deep learning models for LiDAR-based object detection and segmentation.
  • Assist in improving LiDAR detection performance, particularly for complex surfaces, through literature review and experimental evaluation.
  • Support the implementation and evaluation of deep learning models for LiDAR point clouds (e.g., PointNet, PointNet++, and other 3D architectures).
  • Contribute to the development and assessment of perception algorithms that combine LiDAR and camera data under supervision.
  • Help collect, preprocess, and analyze camera and LiDAR data for model development and testing.
  • Experiment with open-source toolkits such as Open3D and PCL for point cloud processing and visualization.
  • Assist in creating scripts and small pipelines for data preparation and result analysis (using Python, NumPy, OpenCV, etc.).
  • Participate in code reviews, documentation, and team meetings to learn best practices in research and development.
  • Stay current with recent advancements in LiDAR perception and deep learning by reading and summarizing relevant scientific papers.

The above description represents the most significant essential duties of this position but does not exclude other occasional work assignments not mentioned.

Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Coursework or project-based experience in computer vision, deep learning, or robotics.
  • Familiarity with at least one deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow).
  • Understanding of fundamentals in data analysis, 3D geometry, and point cloud processing.
  • Exposure to LiDAR data and/or related libraries (Open3D, PCL).
  • Programming experience in Python. Familiarity with C++ is an advantage.
  • Ability to conduct literature surveys and summarize technical concepts accessibly.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, and enthusiasm for hands-on learning in a collaborative team environment.
