What is a Computer Science Intern job?

A Computer Science Intern is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, or other computing fields. Interns typically assist with coding, debugging, research, and testing while working under the guidance of experienced professionals. This role helps build technical skills, industry knowledge, and networking opportunities, preparing interns for full-time positions in the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer Science Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), data structures, algorithms, and basic software development principles, typically backed by ongoing coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes exposure to cloud platforms or coding certifications can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, initiative, and the ability to work well within a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that interns can quickly contribute to projects, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate effectively with experienced professionals.

What kind of projects and tasks can I expect as a Computer Science Intern?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as writing and testing code, debugging software, supporting ongoing development projects, and collaborating on team-based assignments. Interns often contribute to designing features, fixing bugs, conducting research, or assisting in quality assurance under the guidance of senior engineers or mentors. The exact nature of your projects may vary based on the company and team, but you will typically gain hands-on experience with real-world software development tools and workflows. This exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand agile work environments and best practices, making it a valuable step toward a full-time role in the field.

Position Overview
We're hiring a high-performing intern based inNew York, NY or Boston, MA to support AI adoption and impact across our internal team and portfolio companies. This is a hands-on operator/builder role: you'll work directly with Investment and Portfolio Operations teams to understand workflows and build practical AI solutions that improve speed, quality, and decision-making.

As Providence expands its use of enterprise AI, you'll help translate business needs into scalable technical solutions using tools like ChatGPT/Claude, coding copilots, automations, agents, and integrations. You will engage Providence's technology team as a partner in solution delivery and independently drive execution, ensuring clear communication and alignment throughout collaboration.

This is not a research or strategy role. Success means shipping usable workflows, driving adoption, and delivering measurable impact.

Responsibilities
The AI Enablement Intern will be responsible for the following:AI Development & Enablement
  • Build and maintain a curated library of prompts, custom GPTs, agents, and repeatable automations for internal use

  • Act as a technical partner to internal AI champions: assess feasibility, define data requirements, build prototypes, and help scale what's working

  • Support team AI fluency through hands-on demos and practical guidance

Investment Analysis & Deal Execution Support
  • Collaborate with the investment team to identify and build AI tools that accelerate deal workflows - including sourcing, screening, diligence, and investment memo preparation

  • Scope and implement other AI/ML solutions that improve the quality and consistency of investment decision-making across the deal lifecycle

Data, Automation & Reporting
  • Improve internal data collection and knowledge management processes to enable more effective AI applications

  • Prototype tools to automate recurring analyses, dashboards, and reporting outputs

  • Work with the technology team where deeper integrations are needed

Portfolio & Value Creation Support
  • Identify practical AI opportunities within portfolio companies, with a focus on revenue growth, cost optimization, and operational efficiency

  • Support evaluation of portfolio company AI adoption and impact

  • Help develop content for AI-focused portfolio initiatives and knowledge-sharing sessions

In addition to the outlined responsibilities, you will be expected to handle ad hoc requests as they arise. This job description is not exhaustive and may not encompass all aspects of the role, as the needs of the business are continually evolving. Flexibility and adaptability are essential for success in this dynamic position.

Requirements
We are committed to creating a workplace that fosters a collegial, inclusive, and collaborative environment. As part of the Providence team, it's important that we hire candidates that align and exhibit our values:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across teams, actively contribute ideas, and build strong, trustbased relationships to achieve shared goals and drive collective success.

  • Proven track record of taking accountability for outcomes, following through on commitments, and acting with honesty, transparency, and ethical judgment in all situations.

  • Commitment to fostering a positive, engaging workplace culture by supporting colleagues, contributing to a sense of belonging, and modeling behaviors that reflect and strengthen our organizational values.

  • Ability to work respectfully with individuals of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, demonstrating empathy, fairness, and a commitment to inclusive practices in everyday interactions and decisionmaking.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of success, a positive professional reputation, and the ability to exercise sound judgment and accountability. In addition, the successful candidate should have:

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience or currently pursuing a graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field

  • Hands-on track record building with AI tools (e.g., prompt engineering, workflow automation, agents, custom GPTs, or similar)

  • Foundational knowledge of accounting, corporate finance, and valuation concepts

  • Experience building financial models in Excel

  • Data engineering literacy: Able to define data sources, schema requirements, and API inputs/outputs needed to build solutions

  • Proactive approach to proposing use cases and developing solutions with limited direction

  • Strong collaborator able to work effectively across portfolio operations, investment, and technology teams, and translate between business needs and technical requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize large volumes of information and translate insights into clear, structured outputs

  • High attention to detail and strong quality control mindset

  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Intellectual curiosity and a genuine interest in private equity, investing, and applied AI within financial services

At Providence, we believe our people are our greatest asset. We are committed to creating a workplace that fosters a collegial, inclusive, and collaborative environment. When you join Providence, you become part of a dynamic and innovative community where your talents are supported, your dedication is nurtured, and your contributions are greatly valued.
