As an Excess and Surplus (E&S) carrier, we face unique and interesting problems every day. We are looking for a Data Science Intern to join our RA&D team for the summer. The role will report to the Director of Data Science.

Upland Capital Group, Inc. is an AM Best rated "A-" VIII specialty property/casualty insurer headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Through its wholly owned insurance carrier, Upland Specialty Insurance Company, the company markets, underwrites and services specialty insurance products in select markets to include excess transportation, construction casualty, excess casualty, primary general liability, excess public entity, professional liability errors and omissions as well as excess cyber liability.

We focus on "old school" underwriting as a craft, add "new school" analytics and technology, and encourage a gritty, growth mindset among people called "we entrepreneurs."

At our Risk, Analytics, & Data (RA&D) team, we focus on Actuarial, Data Science, Data and Model Engineering, and Enterprise Risk Management functions. Our Actuarial and Data Science model environment and architecture is containerized and cloud-based, running on Azure. This internship offers hands-on experience within a production analytics environment - working alongside experienced practitioners on real problems in specialty insurance. You will contribute to projects that enhance actuarial, underwriting, and claims insights through data-driven analytics, while developing practical skills in a collaborative, intellectually demanding setting.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Data Science Intern at Upland, you will work alongside our data scientists and actuaries on analyses and modeling projects that support decision-making across actuarial, underwriting, and claims functions. You will be encouraged to ask questions, try new approaches, and develop your skills in a real production analytics environment.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to the curation of modeling datasets using internal and external data sources
  • Support the development and testing of models and analytics products under the guidance of senior data scientists
  • Assist with model documentation and help maintain standards for reproducibility and transparency
  • Research and apply data science techniques relevant to specialty insurance problems
  • Use AI to develop more efficient analytic workflows

  • Self-starter, quick learner, and creative problem solver who thrives in a flexible, fast-paced, and remote work environment

Preferred:

  • Basic understanding of the P&C insurance industry
