Job description

Life Science Long-Term Substitute Teacher (9-12)

  • Replacement for employee on a leave of absence

We are seeking a versatile Life Science teacher for a long-term substitute position to lead our high school Biology and Environmental Science courses. The candidate will guide high school students through a comprehensive exploration of the complexity, diversity, and interconnectedness of life on Earth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Biology Instruction: Teach core biological principles, including Cell Specialization and Homeostasis, DNA and Inheritance, and Natural Selection and Evolution.
  • Environmental Science Instruction: Lead students in investigating factors affecting the environment through experimentation, modeling, and simulation, with a focus on real-world applications and sustainability.
  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Ability to conduct and facilitate 3-Dimentional investigations and authentic learning experiences that encourage students to apply scientific knowledge to solve problems.
  • Sustainability & Global Impact: Instruct students on the scientific and social factors affecting sustainability, including nutrient cycling, biodiversity, and human impacts on climate.
  • Collaborative Planning: Willingness to work collaboratively with fellow department members to implement the district's approved science curricula and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Requirements:

  • Certification: Valid NJ Instructional Certificate (Teacher of Biology or Biological Science).
  • Core Knowledge: Strong command of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and NJ Student Learning Standards for Science.
  • Technical Skills: Background with implementation of Google Apps for Education and the ability to utilize computer simulations to test environmental solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and rigor a variety of learning abilities.
  • Bilingual proficiency (a plus).

Salary: 

  • Days 1-20 - $130.00 a day
  • Day 21+ = $367.00 per day HTEA  26/27 STEP 1 BA Teacher Guide

Benefits: Leave replacement teachers receive benefits after 5 consecutive months of working (single health benefits).
In addition to the base salary, eligible employees receive a comprehensive benefits package:  including medical/vision, prescription and dental insurance, and paid time off.
