Job Description Summary
Chicago State University (CSU), is the oldest public university in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Department of Computing, Information and Mathematical Sciences, and Technology (CIMST) at Chicago State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computer Engineering beginning Fall 2026. CIMST is a vibrant and diverse academic unit that emphasizes the intersections of people, computing, information, and technology. The department offers Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) degrees in Computer Science. Our faculty and students represent a wide range of backgrounds, contributing to a dynamic and inclusive academic community.
Responsibilities
Faculty members are expected to contribute to teaching, research, and service, as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
Teaching: Teach up to 24 credit-unit equivalents per year; develop syllabi, instructional materials, and innovative course content; advise students; supervise graduate theses and research projects; engage in professional development and participate in assessment activities tied to accreditation and program evaluation.
Research: Conduct research in computer engineering or closely related fields, publish in peer-reviewed venues, seek external funding, and present work at academic and professional conferences.
Service: Participate actively in departmental, college, university, professional, and community committees and initiatives, assuming leadership roles as appropriate over time.

Required Education
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Strong research interests in areas such as semiconductor technology, embedded systems, robotics, drone technology are highly desirable, with evidence of scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students and mentoring graduate research.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to supporting diverse student populations and fostering an inclusive learning environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability and commitment to actively contribute to departmental, college, and university initiatives through high-quality teaching, scholarly research, and professional service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching and research experience in FPGA, VHDL/Verilog, MATLAB, and IoT.
  • Familiarity with professional certifications (e.g., Cisco, CompTIA, etc.).
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to develop curricula related to emerging technologies.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience in higher education.
  • Record of or potential for grant writing and external funding.
  • Interest in contributing to departmental service, curriculum development, and program assessment.
  • Experience working at a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI), HBCU, or other minority-serving institution is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience delivering undergraduate or graduate courses online or in hybrid formats.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) such as Brightspace.
