What is computer science fraud?

Computer science fraud refers to deceptive or unethical practices within the field of computer science, such as falsifying data, misrepresenting research results, or engaging in activities like software piracy or hacking for personal gain. This type of fraud can occur in academic research, software development, cybersecurity, and other related areas. It undermines trust in technological systems and can have serious legal and ethical consequences for individuals and organizations involved. Preventing computer science fraud requires adherence to ethical guidelines, transparent research methods, and strong cybersecurity measures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Fraud Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Fraud Analyst, you need a solid background in computer science, cybersecurity, and data analysis, usually supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications such as CISSP or CFE. Familiarity with digital forensics tools, intrusion detection systems, and security information and event management (SIEM) platforms is essential for investigating and preventing fraud. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital for identifying vulnerabilities, mitigating risks, and effectively collaborating with stakeholders to safeguard organizational assets.

What are some common challenges faced by computer science professionals working in fraud detection roles?

Professionals in computer science fraud detection often encounter rapidly evolving tactics used by fraudsters, requiring continuous learning and adaptation. Balancing the need for accurate detection with minimizing false positives is a frequent challenge, as overly strict algorithms can inconvenience legitimate users. Additionally, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—such as data scientists, cybersecurity experts, and business stakeholders—is important to ensure comprehensive fraud prevention strategies and timely incident response.

Job description

Computer Scientist

The Opportunity:

As an analytics professional, you're excited at the prospect of unlocking the secrets held by a data set, and you're fascinated by the possibilities presented by IoT, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI). If you care about moving a mission forward as much as advancing the field of data science, this is the opportunity for you. Your deep data science expertise coupled with an original approach to your work will help clients and stakeholders make sense of their data and encourage actionable results. We're looking for someone like you to lead complex data exploration and analytics projects through your experience with statistics for the Department of Defense.

As an advanced data scientist and researcher on our national security team, you'll evaluate AI methodologies to make a real-world impact on AI usage in strategic intelligence. You'll grow your skills in continuous auditing, testing, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV), and AI risk mitigation, to shape the future of analytics through a variety of means. We'll keep you sharp and moving forward in your career, with access to online courses and opportunities to publish or present at conferences. Whether you're using AI to improve government efficiency or developing new TEVV procedures, you'll guide a team that serves critical missions from end to end.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 8+ years of experience correlating complex technical findings into graphical, written, visual, and verbal narrative products

  • 5+ years of experience with object-oriented programming (OOP) and functional programming to build modular and scalable testing libraries

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, including AI/ML validation

  • Experience with building automated data input modules, synthetic data generation for testing, and managing high-integrity "Gold Standard" datasets for testing and evaluation

  • Experience working on classified networks in support of DoD or IC clients

  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and direction

  • Ability to visualize complex data and concepts for non-technical leadership, highlighting system risks and "go or no-go" criteria clearly

  • Active TS/SCI clearance; willingness to take a polygraph exam

  • Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of experience with scientific techniques, such as mathematics, statistics, information science, AI, machine learning, probability modeling, data mining, data engineering, or data warehousing, or 12+ years of experience with scientific techniques, such as mathematics, statistics, information science, AI, machine learning, probability modeling, data mining, data engineering, or data warehousing, in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience reviewing and evaluating technical documentation for compliance with applicable standards

  • Experience developing and executing TEVV procedures

  • Experience evaluating AI system performance, robustness, and fairness

  • TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance is required.
