Job description

The ideal candidate for this position will be supporting the Greater Hartford area. The job sites are commutable for a candidate living in these areas. The main office is located in Chicopee, MA.
Job Title: Project Manager/ Estimator
Job Summary: In this role, you will oversee multiple construction projects, establish strong relationships with clients, and ensure the successful completion of projects. Your responsibilities will include estimating project costs, managing budgets and schedules, coordinating with field supervisors and craftsmen, and providing technical guidance. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. This position reports to the VP of Estimating and Project Management, and requires the ability to manage, document, and complete projects efficiently and cost-effectively.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with clients to understand project requirements and determine necessary resources.
  • Prepare accurate and detailed project estimates by thoroughly reviewing proposal specifications, drawings, and other relevant information.
  • Monitor and provide input on the overall construction effort to ensure projects are completed according to design, budget, and schedule. This includes maintaining effective communication with clients, architects/engineers, and other contractors.
  • Direct and support on-site crew leaders to ensure projects are executed efficiently and within budget.
  • Provide technical assistance to craftsmen, including interpreting drawings, recommending construction methods and equipment, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for clients, maintaining strong relationships and representing the company in project meetings.
  • Cultivate and maintain profitable long-term business relationships with assigned clients, following our CuRT (Customer Relationship Tracking) process.
  • Identify potential new projects from existing clients and actively pursue leads.
  • Provide input during the estimating phase and review the final estimate for project execution; monitor construction to ensure it aligns with design, budget, and schedule. Responsible for project financial oversight, budget tracking, and direct profit and loss responsibility.
  • Provide timely, accurate estimates of physical work completion, costs remaining to complete, and anticipated contract changes utilizing standardized tools and reporting methods.
  • Perform basic sales functions for assigned accounts, such as forecasting, customer service, and periodic site visits.
  • Coordinate the procurement of materials, equipment rentals, subcontractor selection, and identify any special equipment needs.
  • Set clear expectations and goals for crew leaders and ensure they are equipped to meet project requirements.
  • Develop and submit drawings, sketches, subcontracts, shop fabrication, change orders, estimates, etc., as needed to support work.
  • Manage project contracts, including the issuance of purchase orders, estimating and handling of extra work, and issuance of change orders. Ensure completed work complies with codes, drawings, and specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation records, including status reports, punch lists, material requirement calculations, etc., to facilitate efficient project execution.

Requirements:
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical construction, piping, plumbing, and refrigeration preferred, as well as contract design, estimating, and project management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including communication, organization, and relationship building.
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) or Certified Professional Constructor certification is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the customer's industry, manufacturing processes, construction equipment, and techniques.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including the Windows environment, Microsoft Word, Excel, and project management software (e.g., MS Project).

Education and Experience:
  • BS or AS in mechanical engineering, construction management, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3+ years in Industrial Mechanical or Construction Management. Or applicable hands-on field experience.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift fifteen pounds.
