What are some common challenges computer programmers face when working on large-scale software projects?

Computer programmers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple team members, managing complex codebases, and ensuring that their code integrates smoothly with existing systems. Communication and version control become critical as the project grows, and programmers must be adept at using tools like Git and collaborating via code reviews. Additionally, balancing feature development with bug fixes and technical debt is a typical challenge, requiring strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), algorithmic thinking, and a relevant degree or coding certification. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and debugging tools is standard. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this field. These skills are crucial for building reliable software, collaborating with teams, and adapting to evolving technology requirements.

What is computer programming?

Computer programming is the process of designing, writing, testing, and maintaining instructions (code) that computers can execute to perform specific tasks or solve problems. Programmers use programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++ to communicate with computers and create software, websites, apps, and more. This field involves logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and continuous learning to keep up with new technologies.

Do you enjoy solving technical challenges, optimizing manufacturing processes, and seeing your work come to life on the shop floor? If you're an experienced CNC Programmer with strong CAD/CAM skills, we'd like to talk to you.

Owen Industries is seeking a CNC Programmer to support our structural steel and plate processing operations. In this role, you'll transform customer drawings and CAD files into efficient, production-ready programs for our cutting and forming equipment. You'll work closely with production, engineering, and customers to maximize material utilization, improve cycle times, and ensure every job is set up for success.

If you enjoy continuous improvement, problem-solving, and working with state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.

What You'll Do
  • Develop, test, and optimize CNC programs for Pentas lasers and Haas VF6 machining centers.

  • Create efficient nesting layouts that maximize material yield and minimize scrap.

  • Review, clean up, and prepare customer CAD files (DXF, DWG, etc.) for production.

  • Identify and correct drawing issues such as open contours, incorrect scaling, or non-manufacturable geometry.

  • Collaborate with machine operators to improve programs, reduce cycle times, and troubleshoot production issues.

  • Program forming operations using bending software.

  • Perform first-article reviews and adjust programs as needed to ensure quality.

  • Maintain an organized library of approved programs and revision history.

  • Coordinate programming priorities with production scheduling and operations teams.

  • Help drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and standardize programming practices.

What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of CNC programming experience in sheet metal, plate processing, steel service center, or metal fabrication environments.

  • Experience programming Pentas lasers, Haas VF6 machining centers, or similar CNC equipment.

  • Strong experience using SigmaNEST, Fusion 360, or comparable CAD/CAM software.

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and manufacturing specifications.

  • Experience preparing and cleaning customer-supplied CAD files for production.

  • Strong understanding of nesting strategies, tooling, material utilization, and manufacturing processes.

  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work closely with customers, engineering, and production teams.

Why Owen Industries?
  • Modern manufacturing environment

  • Challenging technical work with advanced CNC equipment

  • Stable company with long-term growth opportunities

  • Collaborative culture focused on quality and continuous improvement

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package

  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance

  • 401(k) with Company Match

  • Paid Time Off & Paid Holidays

  • Life Insurance, Short & Long-Term Disability

If you're passionate about manufacturing, enjoy solving technical challenges, and want to help build smarter, more efficient production processes, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today and help turn precision programming into world-class manufacturing.
