What is computer programming?

Computer programming is the process of designing, writing, testing, and maintaining instructions (code) that computers can execute to perform specific tasks or solve problems. Programmers use programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++ to communicate with computers and create software, websites, apps, and more. This field involves logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and continuous learning to keep up with new technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), algorithmic thinking, and a relevant degree or coding certification. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and debugging tools is standard. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this field. These skills are crucial for building reliable software, collaborating with teams, and adapting to evolving technology requirements.

What are some common challenges computer programmers face when working on large-scale software projects?

Computer programmers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple team members, managing complex codebases, and ensuring that their code integrates smoothly with existing systems. Communication and version control become critical as the project grows, and programmers must be adept at using tools like Git and collaborating via code reviews. Additionally, balancing feature development with bug fixes and technical debt is a typical challenge, requiring strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Computer Programming vs Software Development?

AspectComputer ProgrammingSoftware Development
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in computer science or related field; certifications like Microsoft Certified or Oracle CertifiedSame as computer programming, often includes project management certifications
Work EnvironmentOften individual or small team coding tasks, in offices or remote settingsIncludes planning, designing, coding, testing, and deployment, often in larger teams
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, IT departmentsSoftware firms, tech companies, enterprise IT departments
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding coding roles, entry-level tasksBroader scope, project management, and lifecycle involvement

Computer programming focuses on writing code to create software, while software development encompasses the entire process of designing, building, testing, and maintaining software applications. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and responsibilities, with software development involving a broader set of tasks beyond coding alone.

How much do computer programmers get paid?

Computer programmers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but the median annual wage in many regions is around $70,000 to $85,000. Skilled programmers with knowledge of languages like Java, Python, or C++ and experience with software development tools tend to earn higher salaries, especially in tech hubs or specialized fields.

Is computer programming a good career?

Computer programming is a viable career that offers opportunities in various industries such as technology, finance, and healthcare. It typically requires strong problem-solving skills, knowledge of programming languages, and continuous learning to keep up with evolving tools and technologies. The field often provides competitive salaries, flexible work environments, and potential for remote work.

What are careers in computer programming?

Careers in computer programming involve writing, testing, and maintaining code for software applications, websites, and systems. Programmers typically use programming languages like Java, Python, or C++ and may work in various industries such as technology, finance, or healthcare, often requiring problem-solving skills and knowledge of development tools. These roles can range from entry-level positions to senior developer or software architect roles, with opportunities for specialization and advancement.

What jobs can you do as a computer programmer?

Computer programmers can work in roles such as software developers, application programmers, web developers, and systems analysts. They design, write, test, and maintain software applications using programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, often working in teams or independently in various industries. Certifications and knowledge of development tools can enhance job prospects and specialization options.

Join Our Team as a Civil Designer at Water Works Engineers!

Meet Water Works Engineers:

Water Works Engineers (WWE) is a leading civil and environmental engineering firm specializing in innovative and sustainable solutions for water infrastructure projects across the United States. For over 20 years, we have excelled in planning, designing, and implementing projects involving the treatment, storage, and conveyance of drinking water, recycled water, and wastewater. With offices in Scottsdale, AZ; Redding, Roseville, San Mateo, San Diego, and Los Angeles, CA; Star, ID; Albuquerque, NM; and Salt Lake City, UT, we bring an understanding and sensitivity to Western water and wastewater issues. Our expertise includes water and wastewater treatment, stormwater management, hydraulic modeling, and environmental compliance. Committed to innovation, integrity, and teamwork, we enhance the sustainability and resilience of the communities we serve.

Why this role matters:

As a CAD Designer at Water Works Engineers, you will support the planning and design of municipal water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects by developing high-quality drawing sets and design deliverables. Working closely with engineers, project managers, and senior design staff, you will contribute to a wide range of design activities-from translating markups and redlines into accurate drawings to supporting the development of coordinated, construction-ready plans. This role is designed to support a range of experience levels. Depending on your background, you may focus on developing foundational drafting skills or take on more advanced design responsibilities, including managing drawing packages, supporting design coordination, and contributing technical insight to project teams. You will use AutoCAD Civil 3D and related tools to support projects that improve communities and advance sustainable infrastructure solutions.

Your daily impact:

  • Develop drawings, details, and plan sets using AutoCAD Civil 3D, including site layouts, grading plans, utility alignments, and pipe networks.
  • Interpret sketches, redlines, and engineering markups to produce accurate and well-organized design documents.
  • Support the preparation of complete drawing packages, including plan and profile sheets, details, and schedules.
  • Apply company and client CAD standards for file setup, layering, and sheet organization.
  • Collaborate with engineers and design team members to incorporate feedback and resolve design challenges.
  • Perform quality control reviews and back-check drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards.
  • Assist with managing drawing tasks and coordinating deliverables to meet project schedules.
  • Participate in project meetings and contribute to discussions on design progress and revisions.
  • Maintain organized digital files and adhere to version control and documentation standards.
  • Stay current with design tools, workflows, and best practices to support continuous improvement.
  • May support design coordination across disciplines and contribute to refining drawing workflows and standards while guiding junior team members as appropriate.

What you bring to the table:

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related discipline, or equivalent civil-specific experience.
  • 0-7 years of experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D in civil, municipal, or infrastructure-related projects.
  • Familiarity with plan and profile development, grading design, and utility layout tools within Civil 3D.
  • Exposure to additional platforms such as Revit, Plant 3D, MicroStation, or BIM tools is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to interpret engineering plans, sketches, and markups into clear design deliverables.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills in a team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness to learn, grow, and take on increasing responsibility over time.

Unlock Your Benefits Potential:

On day one, as a full-time employee, Water Works Engineers employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package to enhance their well-being and financial stability on their first employment day which includes:

  • Paid Time Off: Eight paid holidays annually, with paid time off (PTO) accrual based on role.

  • Health Insurance: Fully covered for employee-only plans, with the company contributing significantly towards family coverage.
  • Dental and Vision Insurance: Fully covered for employees, with affordable options for family coverage.
  • Life and Disability Insurance: Provided at no cost.
