What is a computer programming internship?

A computer programming internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in software development and coding within a professional setting. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced programmers, contributing to real projects while learning industry-standard tools, languages, and development practices. The goal is to help interns build technical skills, enhance their resumes, and gain insight into how software teams operate, often leading to networking opportunities and potential full-time job offers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Programming Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Programming Intern, a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), basic algorithms, and data structures is essential, often supported by progress toward a computer science degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and possibly exposure to databases or web frameworks is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and clear communication help interns stand out and integrate with development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing effectively to projects, adapting to new technologies, and maximizing the internship learning experience.

What kinds of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a computer programming internship?

During a computer programming internship, you'll typically work on real-world coding projects such as developing features, fixing bugs, or writing automated tests under the guidance of experienced developers. Interns often participate in code reviews, team meetings, and may also help with documentation or research tasks. The exact responsibilities can vary based on the company, but you'll likely collaborate closely with other engineers and possibly with product managers or designers, providing a well-rounded experience. This hands-on exposure helps you build both technical and teamwork skills that are highly valued in the software industry.

Job description

Overview
Susquehanna participates in millions of trades on exchanges around the world every day. Our operations team manages the infrastructure that allows these trades to move forward with speed and accuracy. How do we aggregate and analyze trading data to help make better future decisions? How do we ensure that we correct any trade breaks that would expose the firm to financial risk? How do we constantly improve the efficiency with which we complete the lifecycle of a trade? This is where our Operations team comes in.
As an Operations intern, you will be working closely with the trading desks and other teams that support our trading businesses. Throughout the ten-week internship, you will work on a variety of analytical projects that impact multiple areas of the business and introduce you to current challenges facing our industry. Past projects include trading and profit + loss analytics, automation of operational processes, and research of new business opportunities.
Are you interested in our Summer 2027 Operations Internship? Apply here, and we will reach out in August when recruiting begins.
What we're looking for
  • We look for people from a variety of backgrounds who have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment. Some of our Operations Interns come in with a passion for the financial markets, some come in with programming knowledge. All come in with a curiosity and desire to grow and have an impact on Susquehanna's business.
  • Students pursuing a degree in Finance, Math, Computer Science or a related major with intention to graduate with a bachelor's or master's degree within one year of the internship program
  • Candidates with an advanced knowledge of Excel, as well as experience with Python, HTML, VBA or SQL preferred
  • Ability to collaborate with a team while having the confidence to work independently
  • Candidates with an entrepreneurial spirit who are flexible and have a commitment to innovation
  • Desire to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Visa sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position now or in the future

What's In It For You
  • Our non-hierarchical culture allows employees of every level to thrive and make impact. We are not your typical trading firm - the environment is casual, collaborative and we focus on continuous development.
  • In addition to providing hands-on experience through daily tasks and project work, the program will introduce you to Susquehanna's formal education program through classroom training sessions focused on developing company specific knowledge and technical skills to facilitate process optimization. Topics may include options theory, game theory, decision science, programming (VBA, SQL, Python) and overviews of our trading desks and other areas of our business.
  • Housing provided for duration of internship
  • Relaxed dress code: jeans and sneakers are the norm, shorts all summer long
  • Fully stocked kitchens for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and beverages
  • A forty thousand square-foot state of the art fitness facility with brand-new equipment, multi-purpose courts, group exercise classes, and locker room spaces
  • Discounts for dining, entertainment, shopping, travel, and attractions
  • Social events including a poker tournament, dinners, and sporting events in Philadelphia
  • On-site Wellness Center
  • On-site services such as a mailroom, barber, dry cleaning, and car maintenance
  • Opportunities to give back to the community through Susquehanna sponsored events and donation drive
