What is the difference between Computer Programming Internship vs Software Development Internship?

AspectComputer Programming InternshipSoftware Development Internship
Required SkillsBasic programming languages (e.g., Python, Java)Programming, software design, problem-solving
Work EnvironmentTech companies, startups, educational institutionsTech firms, software companies, startups
Typical Duration8-12 weeks8-12 weeks

While both internships involve programming skills, a Computer Programming Internship typically emphasizes learning coding basics, whereas a Software Development Internship focuses on designing, developing, and testing software projects. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and depth of software engineering tasks.

What is a computer programming internship?

A computer programming internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in software development and coding within a professional setting. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced programmers, contributing to real projects while learning industry-standard tools, languages, and development practices. The goal is to help interns build technical skills, enhance their resumes, and gain insight into how software teams operate, often leading to networking opportunities and potential full-time job offers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programming intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Programming Intern, a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), basic algorithms, and data structures is essential, often supported by progress toward a computer science degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and possibly exposure to databases or web frameworks is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and clear communication help interns stand out and integrate with development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing effectively to projects, adapting to new technologies, and maximizing the internship learning experience.

What kinds of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a computer programming internship?

During a computer programming internship, you'll typically work on real-world coding projects such as developing features, fixing bugs, or writing automated tests under the guidance of experienced developers. Interns often participate in code reviews, team meetings, and may also help with documentation or research tasks. The exact responsibilities can vary based on the company, but you'll likely collaborate closely with other engineers and possibly with product managers or designers, providing a well-rounded experience. This hands-on exposure helps you build both technical and teamwork skills that are highly valued in the software industry.

Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets.

We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role description:

We are seeking a motivated Civil Engineering Designer to join our Transportation team in Ottawa. This is an exciting opportunity to advance your engineering career while contributing to a diverse range of highway, roadway, and utility infrastructure projects. Working within our Design & Engineering teams, you'll create some of the world's most iconic and ground-breaking structures and spaces that transform the world around us, from making journeys easier to opening public places that bring people together.

This role will primarily support municipal roadway, highway, and transportation infrastructure projects throughout Ontario, with opportunities to contribute to utility and linear infrastructure assignments. As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will support the planning, design, and delivery of impactful projects, gaining hands-on experience and mentorship from senior engineers. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer who is eager to develop technical skills, gain project exposure, and grow within a collaborative team environment. Our team delivers sustainable transportation solutions that improve mobility, connect communities, and support growing cities through innovative engineering and digital design.

Role accountabilities:

As a civil designer, you will contribute to a range of infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on detailed design for municipal and linear infrastructure. Responsibilities include preparing functional, preliminary and detailed designs covering all aspects of civil engineering, from grading and drainage to utility layouts and construction specifications. Your expertise ensures project requirements are translated into accurate and constructible solutions.

You will be expected to coordinate closely with the CAD standards group to maintain drafting and modeling standards across all project deliverables. Collaborating with other design disciplines is essential for effective integration of multidisciplinary inputs, resolving interface issues, and supporting seamless project delivery. This collaborative approach is key to upholding quality and consistency throughout the design process.

Prepare engineering drawings, plans, profiles, cross-sections, and 3D models using Civil 3D, MicroStation, and OpenRoads tools. Assist with quantity calculations, cost estimates, design reports, preparation of contract documents and as-built drawings, among other design aspects. Participate in field investigations, site visits, and data collection activities to support project delivery. Support roadway geometric design, grading, drainage, utility coordination, traffic staging, surface creation, corridor modeling, and quantity calculations under the guidance of senior engineers.

Successful candidates will have opportunities to contribute to municipal roadway, active transportation, transit, and major transportation infrastructure projects across Ontario. Arcadis supports professional growth through mentorship, technical training programs, and progression toward professional licensure (P.Eng.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), as applicable.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or College diploma in Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, or Engineering Technology with a focus on Transportation or Municipal;
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in roadway, municipal, or transportation infrastructure design. Relevant co-op, internship, or academic project experience will be considered;
  • Experience with at least one of the following design platforms: AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, or OpenRoads Designer (ORD). Knowledge of multiple platforms is considered an asset;
  • Ability to prepare engineering drawings, 3D models, quantities, and basic design calculations;
  • Prepare and assist in developing designs in accordance with applicable municipal, provincial, and industry standards, including TAC, OTM, MTO Design Supplements, and City of Ottawa standards. Demonstrated resourcefulness in efficiently reviewing and applying these standards in a logical manner;
  • Participate in field investigations, site visits, traffic observations, utility verification, and data collection activities to support project delivery;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong organizational, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities;
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for learning, professional development, participation in transportation infrastructure projects and strong attention to detail
  • Versatility to work both independently and in a group setting in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time management skills to meet deadlines and ability to perform regular quality control checks of the design.
