Job description

Cullerton Group has a new opportunity for a Software Engineer 1 in Morton, IL. The work will be done 100% onsite, Mondayโ€“Friday, approximately 8:00 AMโ€“4:00 PM. This is an 18-month position that can lead to permanent employment with our client.

Compensation is up to $50/hr + full benefits (vision, dental, health insurance, 401k, and holiday pay).


Job Summary

The Software Engineer will support the modernization of a business-critical simulation application by converting legacy FORTRAN code into a modern programming language such as C++. This position will analyze, refactor, test, and validate complex simulation models while working closely with business stakeholders, end users, data scientists, and the existing code owner. The role also involves working with large datasets, troubleshooting discrepancies between legacy and modernized solutions, and using analytical techniques to support inventory and supply chain decision-making.


Key Responsibilities

  • Modernize a critical simulation tool by converting and refactoring legacy FORTRAN code into C++ or another modern programming language.
  • Analyze, maintain, debug, and enhance complex simulation models used to evaluate business and operational changes.
  • Partner with stakeholders and end users to gather requirements, validate functionality, conduct testing, and ensure alignment between legacy and modernized applications.
  • Perform data gathering, data mining, processing, statistical analysis, and modeling across large and complex datasets.
  • Develop and enhance inventory optimization techniques and execute inventory-management simulations.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, investigate discrepancies in simulation outputs, and implement effective solutions.
  • Communicate technical concepts, analytical findings, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. A Masterโ€™s degree is also accepted.
  • 0โ€“2 years of professional experience; internships are accepted as relevant experience.
  • C++ experience is required.
  • Strong programming fundamentals with the ability to understand, debug, refactor, and modernize complex or legacy codebases.
  • Experience or knowledge of code conversion, debugging, and version control.
  • Understanding of requirements analysis, including gathering, analyzing, and documenting business and software requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work with large datasets and evaluate simulation outputs.
  • Knowledge of statistical concepts and data/query tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous exposure to FORTRAN, COBOL, or other legacy software modernization/conversion projects.
  • Experience with simulation modeling, analytics, inventory optimization, or supply chain applications.
  • Familiarity with SQL, database access/query tools, data mining, and data processing.
  • Interest in emerging technologies such as predictive modeling and AI-enabled solutions.
  • Experience collaborating directly with business users to validate requirements and software functionality.
