How much do computer programmer jobs pay per year?
What are computer programmers?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Programmer, and why are they important?
What Does a Computer Programmer Do?
A computer programmer designs, tests, writes, debugs, and maintains the computer program code. The coding language is written for the computer to be able to comprehend it and take specific actions according to those commands. Computer programmers can work with existing code or create something entirely new. The objective of coding is to develop programs that act on specific controls and behaviors. Coders need to be able to work with specialized algorithms, logic, and app domain, as well. But the other key goal of a computer programmer is to design interfaces that regular non-technical users can easily understand and use.
What is the difference between Computer Programmer vs Software Developer?
| Aspect | Computer Programmer | Software Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field | Usually requires a bachelor's degree, often with additional experience or certifications |
| Work Environment | Often works in coding, debugging, and maintaining software | Designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications |
| Industry Usage | Commonly employed in IT, software firms, and tech departments | Found in a wide range of industries including tech, finance, healthcare |
While both roles involve coding and software creation, Computer Programmers primarily focus on writing and debugging code based on specifications, whereas Software Developers are involved in designing and building complete software solutions. The roles often overlap, but Developers typically have broader responsibilities in the software development lifecycle.
What are some typical challenges computer programmers face when working on large team projects?

Job description
Change the world. Love your job.:
In your first year with TI, you will participate in the Career Accelerator Program (CAP), which provides professional and technical training and resources to accelerate your ramp into TI, and set you up for long-term career success. Within this program, we also offer function-specific technical training and on-the-job learning opportunities that will encourage you to solve problems through a variety of hands-on, meaningful experiences from your very first day on the job. The TMG Development program is a 12-month program for new college graduates in the TMG organization.
About This Opportunity
Join our Memory IP Validation team within the Advanced Technology Development organization. You'll characterize cutting-edge memory circuits (SRAM, Flash, EEPROM, eFuse) on advanced technology nodes-working on IP that powers next-generation smartphones, AI accelerators, data centers, and automotive systems.
This role combines hands-on silicon characterization, test automation, and cross-functional collaboration with worldwide teams. You'll work with 300mm development wafers, analyze performance data, and help qualify innovative memory IP designs for customer integration. If you're passionate about bringing circuits from design to reality and solving complex technical challenges, this is an excellent place to start your career.
Why This Role Matters
As part of the Technology Development team, you'll enable next-generation memory technologies through comprehensive characterization. Your silicon feedback shapes design decisions and qualifies innovative IP for cutting-edge products-bridging the gap between circuit design and silicon reality on tomorrow's technologies.
What You'll Gain
- Advanced characterization techniques and statistical analysis methodologies
- Root cause investigation skills during technology development
- Experience qualifying IP from concept through production readiness
- Cross-functional collaboration with designers, process engineers, and business units
- Career paths in validation, product engineering, design, or advanced technology development
- Structured onboarding, dedicated mentorship, and hands-on training
Who will you work with?
Circuit designers, process development engineers, failure analysis teams, and business units.
What You'll Be Doing
Silicon Characterization on ATE
- Characterize memory circuits on 300mm wafers using automated probe stations and parametric test equipment across advanced technology nodes
- Perform AC/DC electrical measurements to validate timing, power, functionality and reliability on new designs
- Perform digital logic testing through Scan/ATPG patterns across temperature, voltage and frequency
- Test analog circuits (sense amplifiers, charge pumps, voltage references) across voltage, temperature, and process variations
- Develop Python, C/C++, or LabVIEW scripts to automate test equipment, data collection, and analysis
- Operate lab equipment: oscilloscopes, curve tracers, parametric analyzers, SMUs, and precision instruments
Data Analysis & Design Optimization
- Analyze characterization data using statistical tools (JMP, Spotfire, Python) to identify design sensitivities and performance trends
- Correlate silicon results with circuit simulations to provide actionable design feedback
- Establish performance benchmarks and test limits for new IP designs
- Generate technical reports and present findings to development teams
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Problem Solving
- Work with business units to qualify new memory IP for next-generation SoC integration
- Partner with circuit designers and process development teams to root cause performance issues and optimize designs
- Collaborate with failure analysis teams to investigate and resolve technical challenges
- Support IP qualification for reliability requirements (retention, endurance, cycling)
- Provide technical documentation to enable customer design integration
- Help transition qualified IP from development to production readiness
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or related
- Cumulative 3.0/4.0 GPA or higher
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong foundation in analog and digital circuit analysis, transistor-level operation and device physics
- Knowledge of analog/mixed-signal circuits (op-amps, comparators, references)
- Familiarity with SPICE simulation (Cadence, Synopsys or equivalent)
- Understanding of memory architectures (SRAM, DRAM, Flash) and its operation
- Understanding of semiconductor physics and fabrication processes
- Programming proficiency in Python, C/C++, or equivalent
- Data analysis skills - ability to extract insights from large datasets
- Familiarity with statistical analysis
- Lab experience with oscilloscopes, power supplies, or measurement equipment
- Semiconductor characterization experience (coursework, research, internships)
- Statistical analysis tools (JMP, Spotfire) or any data visualization tool experience
- Analytical problem solver with attention to detail
- Strong technical communicator (written and verbal)
- Collaborative team player across multiple functions
- Self-driven and adaptable to dynamic environments
