Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Sr CAD Operator is responsible for utilizing computer-aided drafting systems to prepare detailed drawings and 3D models for industrial equipment. The Sr CAD Operator will work closely with Mechanical Engineers and other subject matter experts to interpret design intent, produce accurate fabrication-ready drawings, and coordinate work across engineering, manufacturing, and outside vendors.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Produce detailed 2D fabrication drawings and 3D models for industrial equipment (stacks, breeching, incinerators, and related structural/mechanical components) in accordance with engineering specifications and company standards.
  • Interpret engineering sketches, calculations, and verbal design intent from Mechanical Engineers to produce accurate, manufacturable drawings.
  • Apply proper GD&T, weld symbols (per AWS A2.4), and dimensioning/tolerancing standards (ASME Y14.5) to ensure drawings are fabrication-ready.
  • Maintain and manage CAD model/drawing revisions within the PDM system, ensuring proper version control and release procedures are followed.
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing and Production to resolve fabrication questions, drawing discrepancies, or constructability issues.
  • Support vendor/subcontractor drawing packages, including formatting and submitting fabrication drawings for outsourced components.
  • Generate and maintain BOMs (bills of material) accurately reflecting design changes.
  • Create general arrangement drawings, installation drawings, and client-facing submittal drawings as needed.
  • May support field service or installation teams by producing as-built or field modification drawings.
  • May supervise or review the work of junior CAD Operators/Designers for accuracy and standards compliance.
  • Maintain drawing templates, title blocks, and CAD standards library.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
  • Associate's Degree in Mechanical Design, CAD Technology, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8-10 years of CAD experience in an industrial/mechanical fabrication environment.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D CAD) and AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated experience applying weld symbols and GD&T (per AWS A2.4 and ASME Y14.5) to fabrication and machining drawings.
  • Experience working within a PDM/PLM system for revision control.
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal, structural steel, and refractory-lined equipment fabrication preferred.
  • High degree of proficiency with MS Office Suite, Outlook & Internet applications.
  • Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, and planning skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning).
  • Solid understanding and application of mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as internal and external clients.
  • Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines, and reporting.
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.
