The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. Government Operations Consultant I - OPS (Public Health Fellow)

This is a paid fellowship program for recent MPH graduates to work in Tampa Bay area health departments.   This one-year fellowship is an opportunity to apply your skills while gaining knowledge and hands-on experience.  Participants will be assigned to work with the Florida Department of Health in either Hillsborough, Pinellas, or Pasco counties.   Areas available include Community Health and Health Promotion, Disease Control, Environmental Public Health, Nutrition / WIC, Epidemiology / Public Health Data, Performance Management.  The incumbent will remain with that county and division for the entire year to gain expertise in that program.  

Work will be in person. Day to day activities will be determined by the Director of the program.  Participants will also participate in Quality Improvement initiatives / projects and attend monthly professional development sessions.  

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with highly experienced public health professionals in the assigned program area.
  • Attend staff meetings and training.
  • Participate in monthly leadership development activities / programs.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Attend cohort meetings as scheduled.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the theories / concepts of public health.
  • Basic computer operations skills, as well as working knowledge of MS office products, including Outlook (email), MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to compile, organize, analyze and evaluate data and organize that data into a logical format for presentations and reports.
  • Ability to review and evaluate programs to identify improvements and adjustments needed to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities and to follow instructions.
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence and communicate effectively orally and in writing to a diverse population.

Qualifications:

Minimum 

  • A master's degree in public health (MPH) from an accredited college or university certified by the Council for Education in Public Health (CEPH).

Preferred 

  • Experience working in a public health setting.
  • A bachelor's degree in nutrition or dietetics (for the Nutrition / WIC resident position.)

Where You Will Work:

This advertisement is for multiple positions working in three different Tampa Bay area counties. 

All positions are assigned to the DOH-Hillsborough Director's Office located at - 1105 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa, FL 33602.  Most Fellows will not work at this location. 

The Fellows assigned to Hillsborough County will be stationed at various work sites throughout the county.  Please visit https://hillsborough.floridahealth.gov/locations/index.html for a list of Hillsborough locations. 

The Fellows assigned to work in Pinellas County will be stationed at the St. Petersburg office at 205 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N., St. Petersburg, FL 33701.

One Fellow will work in Pasco County and be stationed at 7509 State Road 52, Hudson, FL 34667.

Some assignments will involve weekly travel to other locations.
