Job description

JOB SUMMARY

As part of the psychology pre-doctoral internship training program, provides direct clinical psychological services to patients and families. Services include psychological evaluation, consultation, and treatment, as well as team participation for inpatient, outpatient, and day treatment patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION

Participates in regular training and supervision with licensed psychologist(s) during internship year to be able to carry out the responsibilities of a staff pediatric psychologist Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary Clinical Team(s) and, through consultation with staff, facilitates coordination and implementation of therapeutic program(s). Administers appropriate psychological tests, interprets test data, and prepares formal psychological evaluation reports for assigned patients Conducts follow-up conferences with patients and/or families. Provides individual, group, and family psychotherapy as indicated. Participates in patient planning conferences and other consultation meetings. Prepares and submits clinical documentation and any correspondence regarding patients. Provides psychological services to outpatient and day treatment patients as assigned. Acts as resource person to Division staff in provision of psychological services. Provides in service training to other staff as part of hospital-wide in service programs. Conducts lectures and other educational activities regarding psychological issues in children and families for medical, educational, and parent groups. Conducts research under the supervision of psychology staff.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Educational Requirements Currently in doctoral degree program from American Psychological Association approved program in professional psychology (clinical, counseling, school). Prior training, coursework or experience in pediatric psychology is preferred. Clinical experience with children, including administration and interpretation of psychological assessment procedures, as well as background in wide variety of treatment modalities. Licensure, Certification and Registration Work Orientation and Experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Other Requirements Specific to Assigned Area Psychology Associate status approved by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Clinical experience through APA accredited professional psychology Master's degree program, including course work and experience in working with pediatric populations. Knowledge of normal and abnormal child development and family functioning and their relationship to chronic illness and disability. Knowledge and skills in psychological assessment of children, adolescents, and families. Knowledge and skills in a broad range of child focused individual, group, and family psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. Ability to communicate effectively with physicians and other team members, family members, community agencies, referral sources, and payors, both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively with an economically and culturally diverse population.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Supervision Received Reports directly to supervising licensed psychologist. Supervision Exercised Some supervision of externs (under the supervision of licensed psychologist).

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Directly communicates with patients, family members, other health care team members, other health system staff, and representatives of referring and other outside agencies and payors. Must be able to handle crisis and sensitive situations in a professional manner.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT USED

Uses on-line health information network system, personal computer, telephone, fax, and various psychological test instruments.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical health care environment. Occasional stress due to multiple demands, shifting priorities, shifting patient populations, and tight time frames. May occasionally be involved in the restraint of a patient. Limited risk of exposure to body fluids, infectious waste, or blood borne diseases. Employees are expected to exercise good judgment in the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to established protocol.
