Job description

A Day in the Life of the Outside Plant Technician:

This is a hands-on, field-based role focused on maintaining and repairing aerial and underground coax and fiber infrastructure. The technician will work outdoors daily using bucket trucks, ladders, and hand tools to restore service, perform preventative maintenance, and support network reliability.

  • The Broadband Network Technician I is responsible for detecting, troubleshooting and resolving system outages for data, video, and telephone.

  • This role will be responsible for emergency restoration of coax, underground cable, maintenance of power supply, leakage and splicing.

  • The BNT I is required to maintain documentation as needed.

  • This role participates in a 24/7 on-call rotation.

  • Detect, troubleshoot and resolve system outages in aerial and/or underground capacities related to transmission levels, signal losses and off-air interference.

  • Prepare and perform emergency aerial and/or underground coaxial cable restoration due to variables such as cable breaks and/or damage

  • Perform preventative maintenance (power supply, actives) in the form of testing, balancing, alignment and adjustments of components or equipment

  • Monitor, record and repair cable leakage, complying with applicable regulations

  • Observe and assist co-workers with fiber splicing activities

  • Complete and distribute required documentation, such as work orders and daily logs

  • Install, replace, and repair coaxial and fiber optic cabling, including aerial and buried plant
  • Perform pole transfers, span replacements, and drop repairs
  • Operate bucket trucks, ladders, and field equipment
  • Participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation

  • Other duties as assigned

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Requirements/Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in telecom field work, cabling, construction, or utilities (coax, fiber, or electrical)

  • Maintain satisfactory driving record and have a valid driver's license

  • Customer Service

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs

  • Work performed in both climate‑controlled and non‑climate‑controlled environments, with potential exposure to heat, cold, dust, damp conditions, uneven surfaces, heights, and moving vehicles

  • Prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and driving required

  • Ability to safely climb and work from ladders for extended periods of time

  • Frequent reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs and ladders, and using hands above and below shoulder level

  • Ability to bend, twist, kneel, squat, crawl, and maintain various body positions and perform fine motor tasks, forceful gripping, and limited keyboarding

The base salary range in Massachusetts for this position is $26.00- $29.00 per hour, plus opportunities for bonus, benefits and commission, if applicable. The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities. It is specific to Massachusetts and may not be applicable to other locations.
