Job Title: Survey CAD Technician
Job Description

The Survey CAD Technician uses AutoCAD and Civil 3D to support civil engineers and surveyors by producing high-quality design and drafting deliverables. This role prepares layouts, detail drawings, sketches, and diagrams for a variety of projects, initially focusing on a large survey project and later contributing to survey, municipal, and land development work. The position combines technical drafting expertise with close collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to deliver accurate, timely, and client-focused solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed drawings using computer-assisted design and drafting equipment and software, primarily Civil 3D and AutoCAD 2D.
  • Interpret and analyze sketches, drawings, notes, and verbal information from engineers, surveyors, technicians, and designers to determine appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, surveyors, technicians, project coordinators, project managers, and support staff to produce accurate drawings and layout data.
  • Revise, update, and modify drawings as necessary to reflect design changes, field conditions, and client feedback.
  • Plot, organize, and assemble project-related documents to support project delivery and documentation requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, mathematical formulas, and physical sciences to develop precise and constructible drawings.
  • Adhere to established company standards, drafting methodologies, and quality control procedures in all work products.
  • Maintain strong internal and external client relationships by delivering responsive, reliable, and professional service.
  • Support achievement of performance objectives and financial metrics as outlined in internal Key Performance Indicator guidelines.
  • Provide drafting and design support for a large survey project and subsequently contribute to additional survey, municipal, and land development projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support project and team needs.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum 2 years of experience using Civil 3D for CAD design and drafting.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drafting and design tasks.
  • Knowledge of survey projects or basic survey principles and workflows.
  • Ability to interpret engineering and survey data, including sketches, notes, and field information, and translate them into accurate CAD drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in drafting, documentation, and file management.
  • Capability to work collaboratively with engineers, surveyors, and project teams in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Familiarity with engineering practices, mathematical formulas, and physical sciences as they relate to drafting and design.
  • Effective communication skills to clarify design intent and coordinate with internal stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 2 or more years of specific experience as a Survey CAD Technician.
  • Experience working on survey projects within a dedicated survey department.
  • Experience with land development and municipal civil design projects.
  • Exposure to municipal engineering and related civil design practices.
  • Experience with MicroStation OpenRoads Designer (ORD) or similar platforms.
  • Ability to adapt to diverse project types in power and energy, municipal, land development, and related markets.
  • Interest in innovative problem-solving and exploring new approaches to design and drafting challenges.
  • Motivation to contribute to a purpose-driven team focused on community development and client success.
Work Environment

This role is primarily office-based, supporting a multifaceted energy, land, and community development practice that serves both private and public sector clients across the Midwestern United States and beyond. During the first 90 days, the Survey CAD Technician works in the office five days per week for training and onboarding. After this initial period, the schedule typically includes Monday through Friday, flexible hours, and approximately 40–50 hours per week, with a hybrid arrangement of three days in the office and two days remote. The work environment blends the capabilities of a larger multidisciplinary firm with the agility and budget-conscious focus of a smaller organization. Team members collaborate across disciplines on survey, municipal, land development, and energy-related projects in a culture described as dynamic, daring, and diverse.
