Job description

Technique is looking for a CAD Technician to join our team at our Jackson, Michigan facility. This position reports to the Engineering Manager in the Engineering department. The CAD Technician is responsible for supporting the manufacturing team by setting up jobs, verifying customer-provided design CAD to prints, creating prototype component and assembly prints, managing engineering documentation, and driving process improvement. This role serves as a key link between account managers, tool designers, and the prototype technician team to translate completed job folders into manufacturing processes.
The ideal candidate brings a minimum of 2-3 years of 3D CAD experience in a manufacturing environment using SolidWorks, combined with at least 2 years designing weld fixtures. Strong working knowledge of GD&T, the ability to read CMM reports, and familiarity with standard shop equipment and welding processes are essential. Excellent communication skills, the ability to manage multiple project timelines, and proficiency with Microsoft Office round out the profile. A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering is preferred but not required; MIG steel welding skill is a plus.
Responsibilities:
  • Verify customer CAD to prints - Review and verify customer-provided design CAD against prints to ensure accuracy before job setup.
  • Create prototype prints - Develop prototype component and assembly prints to support the production team through all part print phases from concept to production.
  • Manage engineering documentation - Maintain and manage engineering documentation including job folders, job travelers, ECN requests, and project timelines through completion.
  • Review and modify product drawings - Review and modify product drawings in CAD incorporating compliance with industry-accepted GD&T methodology, including assembled parts and fixtures.
  • Create 2D blanks and CAD models - Create and adjust 2D blanks for bending applications and analyze or modify 2D and 3D models per customer requirements using SolidWorks, DraftSight/AutoCAD, TruTops, and Spaceclaim.
  • Prepare job folders for manufacturing - Compile and prepare complete job folders for manufacturing, including ballooned prints, inspection reports, control plans, and bills of materials (BOM).
  • Design restraint gauges and check fixtures - Design basic restraint gauges and check fixtures to assist quality inspections, and determine the best tools and methods to qualify components.
  • Collaborate across teams - Facilitate collaboration between account managers, tool designers, and prototype technicians; assist prototype technicians with CAD modifications as they pertain to existing jobs.
  • Manage customer technical data - Upload and download technical information from customers; manage proper file names and locations for large assembly projects; review Engineering Change Notice requests to determine impact and internal routing.
  • Support process improvement and training - Drive process improvement initiatives, train other CAD technicians, and review, update, and maintain the CAD schedule and workload as needed.
  • Work safely and follow procedures - Adhere to safe work practices as defined within company and department-specific safety procedures; perform other duties as required or requested.

Requirements:
  • Minimum 2-3 years of 3D CAD experience in a manufacturing environment using SolidWorks
  • Minimum 2 years of experience designing weld fixtures
  • Excellent working knowledge of GD&T required
  • Ability to read and understand CMM reports
  • Ability to generate a bill of materials (BOM)
  • Knowledge of standard shop equipment and manufacturing processes, especially welding
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Windows
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact with suppliers, customers, and other team members
  • Self-managing and able to work toward completion dates and goals as assigned
  • Ability to multitask and work in high-pressure situations under deadlines
  • Ability to provide technical feedback on potential design risks and product performance issues
  • Skilled with MIG steel welding preferred
  • Ability to use measuring tools such as tape measures
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering preferred, but not required
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer; occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, moving mechanical parts, industrial equipment, vibration, and loud noise
  • No travel required for this position

Position Type and Expected Hours:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a minimum of 40 hours per week with overtime as needed. Note: days and hours required may vary. Flexibility in work schedule is required.
