Job description

JOB SUMMARY: The Lead Medical Technologist is required to perform all duties of the Medical Technologist. This includes performing diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. They will also follow standardized procedures and help prepare samples for testing. Analyze test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits. The Lead MT functions as the resource person to all other staff. Also, the lead acts as a liaison between management and staff. The individual will serve as point of contact for any issue in the daily operation of the lab and will assess, resolve, and/or escalate to the laboratory manager as appropriate. The Lead Medical Technologist must work closely with the laboratory manager to help maintain daily operations of the laboratory including but not limited to staffing, analyzer troubleshooting, paperwork, billing tasks, overtime control, and problem solving.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Works with the lab manager to oversee all lab staff in all locations to make sure the workflow in the lab is handled efficiently.
  2. Works closely with the lab manager to make sure appropriate staff are assigned to each clinic location.
  3. Oversees daily billing responsibilities for the lab.
  4. Always looking for ways to improve organizational workflow and manage appropriately.
  5. Problem solve when issues arise. Will involve the lab manager when appropriate.
  6. Communicate closely with the lab manager for any employee issues that may need to be addressed.
  7. Performs, verifies, and reports laboratory tests in assigned areas as per policy/procedure manuals. It is knowledgeable concerning practices, principles, and techniques.
  8. Analyzes blood cells by using microscopic techniques and procedures.
  9. Ensure operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques
  10. Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, and verifying receipt of supplies.
  11. Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  12. Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests.
  13. Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  14. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  15. Maintains inter- and intradepartmental workflow by fostering a spirit of cooperation.
  16. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols;
  17. Maintains patient confidence and protects the organization by keeping information confidential.
  18. Adheres to quality control policies/procedures and assists in quality assurance. Is aware of the requirements and helps ensure proper documentation for licensure/accreditation.
  19. Performs tasks in an organized, efficient manner while maintaining a clean area and orderly documentation.
  20. Possesses a good working knowledge of the laboratory computer system relating to the position.
  21. Investigates abnormal or unexpected test results before reporting patient testing.
  22. Communicates test results and concepts to fellow employees, other personnel, and physicians with clarity and confidentiality.
  23. Demonstrates procedural performance to new personnel both in theoretical and technical areas. Prepares and assists in technical inservices.
  24. Follows stringent safety guidelines requiring the use of potentially harmful infectious agents and follows and enforces the practice of universal precautions.
  25. Participates in proficiency testing as assigned.
  26. Responsible for all phases of patient testing- Pre-analytical, analytical, and Post-analytical.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, and REGISTRATION:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science.

  2. Completion of a NAACLS-accredited MLS program or a U.S. Military medical laboratory training program that qualifies for ASCP MLS certification eligibility.

  3. Current certification or certification eligibility within 12 months of hire as a Medical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist by ASCP BOC, or as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by AMT, or an equivalent national certifying agency.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  1. 5 years' MT experience required.
  2. Knowledge of medical terminology
  3. Basic computer knowledge and skills
  4. Ability to multitask effectively
  5. Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures
  6. Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks
  7. Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others
  8. Ability to be flexible and do what is necessary to get the job done right in a timely manner

REASONING ABILITY:

  1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  2. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  1. Must interact and communicate both verbally and in written form.
  2. Must interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians and other departmental personnel, and outside agencies on a frequent basis while respecting the confidentiality of patient information.
