Job Summary
Under the direction of the lab manager and medical director, the Cardiac and Vascular Sonographer performs most cardiac and vascular ultrasound exams. Provides quality patient care using lab physiological and ultrasound equipment. Assists with clinical rotations in both in-patient and out-patient settings as the schedule dictates and participates in after hours and on-call services. All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health's values of compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity and teamwork.

Essential Functions
  • All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health's purpose: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference.
  • Performs most modalities of echocardiography (i.e. 2-D, M-Mode, Doppler, and color flow Doppler imaging, as well as, assists with qualified physician with TEE procedures) and peripheral vascular studies (i.e. duplex imaging, Doppler and plethysmography of upper and lower extremity vasculature, abdominal viscera, carotid vasculature and/or intracranial vessels). Performs lab procedures using independent judgement during the exam to accurately differentiate between normal and abnormal findings. Exams must follow IAC approved scanning protocol and the Smart Protocols must be utilized when possible. Reviews images and paperwork to ensure quality exams are complete, thorough and prepared for review by reading physicians.
  • Rotates to multiple lab locations as scheduled and required by the IAC. Participates in the daily workflow by watching the sonographer worklist to ensure timely patient care. Schedules exams through the transport system if applicable. Participates in the Vascular Lab after hours, on-call, weekend and holiday schedules.
  • Operates all lab testing equipment and software packages including but not limited to ultrasound and physiological equipment, EMR and Structured Reporting and PACS. Proficient in the use of telephone, printers, and fax machines. Reports any equipment issues to the appropriate personnel and removes equipment from service. Cleans the equipment and work areas daily and stocks rooms with supplies and linen. Maintains up to date logs to include the monthly cleaning log and the equipment down time log.
  • Attends staff and departmental meetings as well as educational conferences. Participates in the discussions. Keeps abreast of changes in the field and participates in collecting data, images and articles as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements
  • Education - Associate degree. Graduate of a formal sonography program
  • Experience - One (1) year cardiac and vascular sonography experience performing non-invasive lab studies. Clinical rotations during a formal educational program may be considered as related experience.

In Lieu Of
  • In Lieu of the education and experience requirements noted above, may consider five (5) years of dedicated cardiovascular lab experience.
  • In Lieu Of the Educational requirements above, completion of a Director approved sonography program may be considered.
  • Team members in this job as of 11/08/2020 are grandfathered from the minimum requirements listed above pending state and regulatory requirements.

  • Registered in echocardiography (ARDMS-AE and/or ARDMS-PE or CCI-RCS)
