Job Summary:
Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation. The R&D Computer Engineer will lead a team responsible for managing IT infrastructure and systems administration, while also overseeing cybersecurity initiatives to ensure the effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile.
Responsibilities:
• Lead strategic initiatives focused on IT infrastructure management, including server and network administration across Windows and Linux environments, ensuring robust, secure, and efficient systems.
• Manage and mentor a diverse team of IT, cyber, and computer engineering professionals, fostering collaboration across disciplines.
• Oversee the development and deployment of applications and tools that support infrastructure and operational needs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in infrastructure and security.
• Provide expert guidance on infrastructure utilization and systems administration best practices.
• Lead key projects, including cyber-related initiatives, while partnering with the ISSO who manages security plan development and compliance.
Qualifications:
Required:
• A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a required US DOE Q-level security clearance.
Preferred:
• Graduate degree in Computer Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
• Demonstrated ability to execute and deliver technical work products with application of appropriate rigor and pedigree documentation (design/code reviews, technical oversight/approvals, project team concurrence, artifact generation, etc.).
• Experience in computer systems design and software development for real-time and embedded processing systems, distributed processing systems, or real-time client server implementations.
• Familiarity with hardware/software requirements generation for verification, validation and qualification.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, multi-disciplinary team setting for a common purpose.
• Proven experience in managing IT infrastructure, including server and network administration across Windows and Linux environments.
• Strong background in systems administration and troubleshooting complex IT systems.
• Experience developing and deploying applications or tools that support infrastructure and operational needs.
• In-depth knowledge of cybersecurity controls implementation and security plan development, with the ability to collaborate effectively with ISSO personnel.
• Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to effectively motivate and manage diverse teams across multiple disciplines and departments.
• Proven experience in project management, successfully guiding initiatives from inception to completion.
• Experience with programming languages such as Python, C++, and scripting, including web technologies.
• Strong critical and creative thinking abilities, with a proven capacity to analyze complex problems and develop innovative solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to operate independently and make informed decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent.
