Description

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for processing all laboratory specimens in an accurate and timely fashion utilizing the laboratory information system (LIS). Triages specimen delivery and organizes all reference lab send out work.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review all specimens for proper collection requirements, demographic information, correct paper work and special handling.
  • Process specimens according to laboratory policy.
  • Triage stat specimens and organize specimens to go to core lab.
  • Complete the necessary paperwork that must accompany specimens.
  • Operate LIS to receive specimens, order enter testing and add-on and delete specimens.
  • Complete QA forms when appropriate and understand the specimen rejection criteria.
  • Process drug screens for appropriate laboratory and use website to track testing results.
  • Process all reference lab work according to reference lab criteria and include proper documentation and record keeping.
  • Problem solve situations and be able to utilize additional resources for information.
  • Maintain processing area for neatness, cleanliness and organization.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies in the processing area.
  • Cover in phlebotomy when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • May be exposed to hazardous drugs.  
  • Attends OSHA training upon initial employee orientation and annually completes an OSHA competency.


RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS: Direct relationship with patients, staff, physicians and administration. Must maintain courteous and effective working relationship with patients, staff, physicians, and administration.




Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE: Graduated from High School or completed GED requirements. Phlebotomy certification and medical experience preferred.  


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires sitting, standing bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 20 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment such as computer, fax, calculators and telephone. Requires normal hearing and vision
