Job description

As the Unit Secretary / Aide, you will provide secretarial and clerical support to the nursing unit and provide ancillary patient care services in the role of Aide (i.e. Nursing Assistant) on the unit as needed, and in accordance with age-specific category requirements.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Answers telephone on the unit in a respectful and professional manner; relays messages to appropriate parties in a timely manner.
  • Schedules appointments for procedures and tests, obtains results and files results in patient charts.
  • Arranges for consults with MDs.
  • Prepares patient charts for admission and disassembles charts for discharge records information according to Health Information System standards.
  • Assists in patient discharge, including arranging patient transport as needed, assigns room for cleaning.
  • Transports specimens to the lab.
  • Obtains supplies from internal sources such as the Materials Management department.
  • Maintains a clean and secure environment to ensure efficient and safe operation of the nursing unit.
  • Assumes the role of Aide (Nursing Assistant) as needed, including all related competencies as listed in the Nursing Assistant job description.
  • Functions as an active member of the health care team on the unit.

EDUCATION AND RELATED EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • American Heart Association BLS certification
  • Previous experience performing clerical and phone duties in an office or health-care related environment
  • Must have an outstanding customer service attitude and demonstrate a commitment to professional behavior.

Preferred:

  • Massachusetts Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant
  • One year experience as CNA or MA
  • Nursing students who completed one year of nursing clinical training are also qualified.
  • Knowledge of health care terminology
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn multiple health care-related computer systems
