Job description

Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer
Job Description

This Manufacturing Engineer role focuses on supporting CNC and machining operations and/or troubleshooting automated equipment in a high-volume production environment. The engineer spends approximately 80% of their time on the manufacturing floor and 20% in the office, working closely with multiple large CNC centers and automated lines to improve processes, resolve issues, and support new product introductions. The position combines hands-on technical work with process design, documentation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain the CNC and machining area by working directly with approximately six large CNC centers.
  • Set up CNC machines and program CNC equipment using G-code to meet production and quality requirements.
  • Troubleshoot automated equipment and multiple types of equipment, including semi-automated, manual work cells with multiple stations, and fully automated lines that perform machining, loading, assembly, riveting, fastening, pressure testing, and other operations.
  • Spend the majority of time on the production floor to monitor processes, address issues in real time, and ensure equipment runs efficiently.
  • Lead the design, development, and improvement of manufacturing processes to increase throughput, quality, and reliability.
  • Provide engineering support for daily plant operations and act as a technical resource for production teams.
  • Use root cause analysis methods to troubleshoot and resolve daily production problems as they occur.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve quality process documentation, including process flow diagrams, PFMEAs, control plans, standard work instructions, and setup sheets.
  • Support the specification, quoting, purchase, and runoff of capital equipment, tooling, and systems required for manufacturing.
  • Set up and validate equipment for new product introductions into production, including manual work cells and manual assembly operations.
  • Collaborate with tool makers and other skilled trades to implement equipment changes and troubleshoot issues in a unionized environment where direct hands-on work on equipment may be limited.
  • Ensure that production targets, such as high-volume output (e.g., lines targeting up to 1,000 parts per hour), are achievable through robust process design and continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate new processes, optimize existing operations, and support ongoing manufacturing initiatives.
Essential Skills
  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in a CNC and machining environment or an automated manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience supporting CNC machines and machining equipment in a production setting.
  • Proficiency in G-code programming for CNC setup and operation.
  • Experience working with multiple types of equipment, including semi-automated systems, manual work cells with multiple stations, and fully automated lines.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot production and equipment issues using root cause analysis methods.
  • Experience developing and maintaining manufacturing process documentation such as process flow diagrams, PFMEAs, control plans, standard work instructions, and setup sheets.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for mechanical and process design.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as Creo and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with manual assembly operations in a manufacturing environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience supporting complex automated lines that integrate machining, loading, assembly, riveting, fastening, pressure testing, and multiple operations in sequence.
  • Ability to support capital equipment projects, including specifying, quoting, purchasing, and running off new equipment and tooling.
  • Experience working in a unionized manufacturing environment and collaborating effectively with tool makers and other skilled trades.
  • Strong communication skills to work closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams.
  • Ability to balance time on the floor and in the office, adapting to changing troubleshooting and support needs.
Work Environment

This role is primarily floor-based, with approximately 80% of the time spent on the production floor and 20% in an office setting. The engineer supports multiple large CNC centers and automated lines in a high-volume manufacturing facility, including manual work cells, semi-automated stations, and fully automated equipment. Typical working hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. The environment operates as a union shop, so the engineer often collaborates with tool makers and other skilled trades when troubleshooting or implementing changes on equipment. The facility emphasizes structured processes and documentation, and offers benefits such as paid time off and paid holidays.
