What does a computer integrated manufacturing engineer do?

A Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing automated manufacturing systems that use computers to control the entire production process. They integrate hardware and software solutions to streamline operations, improve product quality, and increase efficiency. CIM Engineers work with robotics, computer-aided design (CAD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems to ensure the seamless flow of information and materials throughout the manufacturing process.

How does a computer integrated manufacturing engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Engineer, you'll frequently work cross-functionally with production, quality assurance, design engineering, and IT teams. Your role involves integrating computer systems with manufacturing processes, so you'll often coordinate with software developers to customize automation solutions and with production managers to ensure smooth implementation on the shop floor. Regular meetings and clear communication with these teams are essential for troubleshooting issues, optimizing workflows, and ensuring that technological upgrades align with manufacturing goals. This collaborative environment provides valuable opportunities to broaden your technical knowledge and build strong professional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer integrated manufacturing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Integrated Manufacturing Engineer, you need a strong background in manufacturing processes, automation, and systems engineering, usually supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Proficiency with CAD/CAM software, PLC programming, robotics, and familiarity with ERP systems and lean manufacturing certifications are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for optimizing production and driving process improvements. These skills are vital for integrating advanced technologies in manufacturing, enhancing efficiency, and maintaining competitive operations.

What is the difference between Computer Integrated Manufacturing Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectComputer Integrated Manufacturing EngineerManufacturing Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or related; certifications like CIM or CAD software proficiencyBachelor's in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering; similar certifications often required
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and optimizing automated manufacturing systems in factories or plantsDeveloping manufacturing processes, improving production efficiency, and troubleshooting in production facilities
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by manufacturing firms focusing on automation and integrated systemsCommon across various manufacturing sectors including automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods

The main difference is that Computer Integrated Manufacturing Engineers focus on designing and managing automated, computer-controlled manufacturing systems, while Manufacturing Engineers concentrate on developing and improving manufacturing processes. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications but differ in their focus areas within the manufacturing industry.

Is there a demand for computer integrated manufacturing engineers?

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) engineers are in high demand due to the increasing adoption of automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing systems across industries. Employers seek professionals skilled in CAD/CAM software, PLC programming, and systems integration to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.

Job description

nVenia, a member of the Duravant family of operating companies, is a manufacturer and supplier of packaging equipment machinery. With over 200 years of combined experience, our long-standing brands of Arpac, Fischbein, Hamer, Ohlson and Mespack serve end customers in custom packaging goods, food and beverage, industrial and other markets.
As a Duravant Family Company, nVenia participates in global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs, as well as Doing Good initiatives to support our communities. In addition to a culture that promotes long term career satisfaction, with opportunities for personal and professional growth, nVenia offers an excellent total rewards package that includes:

• Competitive Compensation
• Comprehensive benefit package designed to support our employees’ health, well-being, and financial security.
• Work/life programs to provide a safe, secure, and balanced environment.
• Education and training programs.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly capable Manufacturing Engineer to support a high mix, low volume (HMLV) engineered-to-order business. This role will drive ERP (Epicor) excellence, design-for-manufacturability (DFM), and operational analytics to improve production efficiency, and product cost structure. This individual will operate as a critical partner to product management, engineering, and operations, ensuring that designs are manufacturable, routings are accurate, and data drives decision-making.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive operational efficiency through ERP part setup, including EOQ, routings, and product structure
  • Partner with IT and operations to optimize Epicor workflows for high-mix, low-volume manufacturing
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives tied to ERP usage, including cycle time reduction, labor standards, and scrap tracking
  • Develop scalable processes for engineered-to-order and configurable products
  • Improve throughput without relying on high-volume assumptions or rigid standardization
  • Balance flexibility with discipline in manufacturing processes and documentation
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to reduce complexity and improve production flow
  • Partner with design engineering early in development to ensure manufacturable designs
  • Identify cost reduction opportunities through simplified fabrication, assembly, and material selection
  • Establish DFM guidelines and best practices across product lines
  • Support VAVE initiatives to improve margins, reduce part count, and minimize variability
  • Analyze manufacturing performance, including labor efficiency, cost variance, and lead times
  • Build and maintain models to support quoting, capacity planning, and process improvement
  • Identify root causes of inefficiencies using structured problem-solving methods
  • Translate data into clear, actionable recommendations for leadership

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5–10+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in a high mix, low volume environment
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems (Epicor strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated expertise in DFM and product cost optimization
  • Strong analytical skills (Excel, data modeling, cost analysis)
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally (engineering, operations, product management)

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with engineered-to-order or configurable equipment/products
  • Background in packaging machinery or automation systems
  • Familiarity with Lean principles adapted to HMLV environments (not strict LMHV)
  • Exposure to CAD-PDM integrations and part standardization strategies

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for a minimum of 8 hours per day. The employee is frequently required to grasp, handle, and feel objects, control and manage tools, and use hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but at times loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential function

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
