Overview
Azure and GitHub bring together Azure platforms and Edge engineering systems to deliver custom solutions and services. Driven by its customers' needs, the Azure Edge team seeks to accelerate growth for GitHub and Microsoft's customers.
At Azure Edge, we're looking for a Hardware Engineer that will support our Engineering teams with hands-on system hardware (HW) development and operations processes, product test and script generation and execution, and lab(s) infrastructure management. In addition, you will learn and perform onsite workflows including manufacturing test and sustaining of first-party computer systems, warehouse and inventory management, shipping and receiving, while supporting the maintenance of manufacturing infrastructure and secure areas. As a member of our team, you will apply hands-on learning to support in-market Azure Edge commercial and ruggedized products, and custom computer hardware systems that are purpose-built for Azure/GitHub commercial solutions and deployed in Azure datacenters.
This role will require working knowledge and hands-on experience with computer hardware and operating systems (Mac/macOS, x86/Linux/Windows), computer mechanical assembly, soldering skills, and network switch management. You will work with internal Engineering teams on commercial product development, production, and support. You will be a member of a team that is supporting Azure Edge and driving a next-generation GitHub solution offering supported by Azure.

Responsibilities
  • Supports and contributes to the HW Engineering and Operations team effort, development, and product lifecycle deliverables for the GitHub/Azure and Azure Edge portfolio.
  • Works with HW and Mechanical engineers, applies hands-on skills to computer hardware assembly/disassembly, PCBA component replacement via soldering tools, and experimentation including test equipment setup, debug processes, and fix validation.
  • With HW Validation Engineers, contributes to the HW test software and automation environment by applying working knowledge and experience of computer test software and tools, including augmenting and generating new test scripts using PowerShell, Python, or equivalent.
  • Per the HW Validation plan and Engineering oversight, performs system HW testing, firmware (FW) validation, and component qualification and results reporting through the development and production lifecycle.
  • Supports and contributes to hardware and firmware investigations including supplier and internal root-cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action (CA) processes to address design, component, and manufacturing defects and quality issues.
  • Maintains HW Engineering lab and Manufacturing test areas, including test infrastructure and configuration management and security updates of network switch firmware and Windows and Linux OS systems.
  • Performs and supports onsite production operations including manufacturing test, quality, and shipping/receiving processes. Follows documented procedures and perform manufacturing quality inspections, testing, system diagnosis and repair, software stack imaging using internal and industry tools.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
    • OR equivalent experience

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
    • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations or Export Administration Regulations, the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide either proof of their country of citizenship or proof of their U.S. permanent residency or other protected status (e.g., under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience
  • Experience with Mac/macOS and Linux computer systems and test environments; hardware, software, and firmware.
  • Experience in automation, scripting, test tools, and software programing including PowerShell, Python, or equivalent environments for hardware and firmware validation testing.
  • Strong hands-on skills and expertise in computer hardware assembly, diagnosis and repair, testing and validation, and problem solving in a lab and manufacturing test environment.
  • Skills to work independently and as part of a larger development team

Hardware Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $85,400 - $168,100 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $111,100 - $183,700 per year.
