What is the difference between Computer Hardware Designer vs Computer Hardware Engineer?

AspectComputer Hardware DesignerComputer Hardware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related fieldBachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, CAD software, collaborative teamsDevelopment labs, testing facilities, manufacturing settings
Industry UsagePrimarily in design and development of new hardware productsInvolved in designing, testing, and improving hardware systems

Computer Hardware Designers focus on creating new hardware designs using CAD tools, while Computer Hardware Engineers work on developing, testing, and refining these designs for production. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often collaborate, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ within the hardware development process.

What are some typical challenges faced by Computer Hardware Designers when working on new product development?

Computer Hardware Designers often grapple with balancing innovation and practicality during new product development. They must ensure that hardware components meet performance targets, comply with industry standards, and are manufacturable within budget constraints. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as software engineers and manufacturing specialists—is crucial, as design changes can impact the entire product lifecycle. Staying updated with rapidly evolving technology and integrating new materials or components also presents ongoing challenges.

What does a Computer Hardware Designer do?

A Computer Hardware Designer is responsible for creating and developing the physical components that make up computers and related devices, such as circuit boards, processors, memory devices, and networking hardware. They use engineering principles and design software to draft and test new hardware concepts, ensuring they meet technical specifications and industry standards. Their role often involves collaborating with software developers, testing prototypes, and troubleshooting hardware issues to optimize performance and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Hardware Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Hardware Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering, circuit design, and computer architecture, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree. Proficiency with hardware description languages (such as VHDL/Verilog), CAD tools (like Altium Designer or OrCAD), and simulation software is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set exceptional designers apart. These skills ensure reliable, innovative hardware solutions that meet complex technical requirements and industry standards.

Job Description:

Join L3Harris Space Systems and help shape the future of space innovation. In this role, you'll lead the computer aided design of advanced space-based ISR and remote sensing technologies that support critical government, civil, and commercial missions. As a Technical Manager, you'll guide a high-performing engineering team in creating sophisticated opto-mechanical space systems and precision mechanisms that operate in some of the most demanding environments imaginable.

Bring your expertise in ECAD and MCAD tools to a role where you'll help enable the engineering of advanced, mission-critical technologies. As a subject matter expert in applications such as Creo, Windchill, NX, and Xpedition, you'll play a key role in improving tool performance, solving complex technical challenges, and driving initiatives that strengthen engineering productivity and digital workflows.

In this role, you'll support ECAD/MCAD users across programs, lead troubleshooting and issue resolution efforts, and help advance solid modeling standardization. You'll also serve as a key liaison between Hardware Engineering, DES (EIT), and Digital Engineering teams-helping connect technical needs with enterprise solutions while providing visibility to leadership on priorities, progress, and open issues. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys combining deep technical knowledge with cross-functional collaboration and high-impact problem solving.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the CAD design of high-precision opto-mechanical space hardware, including machined components, composite structures, deployable mechanisms, support structures, tooling, and fixturing
  • Apply flight-proven design approaches to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions on ambitious schedules
  • Provide technical leadership across design reviews, engineering boards, and day-to-day execution to help teams meet program objectives
  • Support production with CAD designs of tooling, fixturing, test equipment, and other manufacturing aids
  • Serve as a functional leader for the CAD design team through mentorship, technical guidance, resource planning, process improvements, and strategic execution
  • Drive commitments for cost, schedule, and technical performance
  • Act as a key liaison between Hardware Engineering and DES (EIT) to resolve engineering tool and process challenges
  • Use Creo and Windchill knowledge to support modeling, drawing standards, and issue resolution
  • Apply strong mechanical design expertise and understanding of manufacturing and assembly methods
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, including ASME Y14.5 and ASME Y14.100
  • Lead complex, high-impact initiatives that improve engineering tools, processes, systems, and overall team performance
  • Communicate technical issues, priorities, and recommendations clearly across teams and leadership

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program and 12+ years of relevant experience, or graduate degree and 10+ years, or 16+ years of related experience without a degree
  • Professional experience in executing Hardware CAD designs for military developmental programs
  • Professional experience with PTC Windchill and Creo Parametric
  • Professional experience leading engineering functional teams through design, analysis, test, hardware build, delivery, and launch
  • Professional experience in guiding/incorporating thermal or structural modeling and design methods, tools and results into a mechanical design
  • Professional experience in 3D computer aided design tools
  • Professional experience leading process improvement initiatives
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
