Job Summary

The Petrography Technician is an entry-level laboratory role supporting petrographic analysis of concrete, aggregates, and other construction materials. This position focuses on sample preparation, basic microscopic examinations, and laboratory testing to assist in material characterization and quality control. Working under the guidance of experienced petrographers, the technician ensures accurate data collection and compliance with ASTM and industry standards. This role provides a strong foundation for individuals interested in advancing into petrography and forensic material analysis.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reasonable accommodation or workable solutions may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Prepare, process, and handle samples (e.g., concrete, aggregate, mortar, cementitious materials) for microscopic and chemical analysis in compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, and AET standards.
  • Cut, grind, polish, and create thin sections of concrete and rock specimens using precision saws, lapping machines, and polishing wheels.
  • Assist in staining and dye penetration techniques for identifying cement paste, aggregate, and reaction products under fluorescence and polarized light microscopy.
  • Conduct basic petrographic examinations using stereo microscopes, reflected light, and transmitted light microscopy to classify materials based on texture, mineral composition, and degradation characteristics.
  • Conduct fundamental petrographic analyses to classify materials, assess aggregate reactivity, and evaluate concrete distress using ASTM C295, C856, and C457 standards.
  • Assist in chemical and durability testing, such as sulfate soundness, chloride content analysis, and air-void system evaluations, to support petrographic findings.
  • Accurately log and document sample data, ensuring proper traceability and compliance with industry standards and laboratory protocols.
  • Collaborate with Petrographers and Senior Petrographers in the assessment of failed concrete structures, asphalt pavements, and construction aggregates to determine material deficiencies.
  • Support forensic investigations by helping collect field samples and preparing visual macro/microphotographs of material defects.
  • Learn and assist in interpreting petrographic data and drafting preliminary laboratory summaries for internal review.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and calibrated laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with quality control standards and AET safety protocols.
  • Assist in reviewing laboratory procedures to ensure that all work aligns with industry best practices and client specifications.
  • Follow established safety protocols, including handling chemicals, wearing PPE, and properly disposing of laboratory waste.

Required Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in geology, materials science, chemistry, civil engineering, or a related field preferred; relevant laboratory experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of mineralogy, concrete technology, or construction materials is a plus.
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting, handling petrographic or construction materials, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with ASTM standards related to petrography and construction materials testing is beneficial.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, laboratory data management systems, and digital microscopy software.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow technical procedures, and interest in forensic material science.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with petrographic or optical microscopy is a plus.
  • Knowledge of cement chemistry, aggregate durability, and concrete deterioration mechanisms.
  • Hands-on experience with sample preparation techniques, including cutting, polishing, and staining of concrete specimens.
  • Ability to interpret macroscopic and microscopic observations related to material distress.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical documentation and reporting.
  • Interest in career progression within the Petrography Job Family, advancing towards Petrographer and Senior Petrographer roles.


Pay Transparency

Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $23.00 – $26.00 per hour based on skill set and experience. AET offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health benefits, insurance, Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), long term savings, paid time off, and professional development opportunities. The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

The role requires frequent use of microscopes, precision cutting and polishing equipment, and chemical solutions for material analysis.
