What are entry-level computer engineering jobs?

Entry-level computer engineering jobs are positions for recent graduates or individuals with limited work experience in the field. These roles typically involve assisting in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of computer hardware and software systems. Common job titles include Junior Computer Engineer, Hardware Engineer, Software Engineer, and Systems Analyst. Entry-level engineers often work under the supervision of senior staff, gaining practical experience while contributing to various technology projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an entry-level computer engineer expect in their first year?

As an entry-level computer engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as assisting in the design, testing, and troubleshooting of hardware or software components. Typical responsibilities include writing and debugging code, assembling and testing hardware prototypes, and collaborating with more experienced engineers on larger projects. You'll likely be assigned smaller modules within a project to help you build technical skills while becoming familiar with company tools and processes. Teamwork is common, and you'll often work closely with cross-functional teams like software developers, hardware designers, and quality assurance specialists.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry-level computer engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineering Entry Level professional, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, programming languages (such as C/C++ or Python), and a relevant bachelor's degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), and basic circuit design tools is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities ensure you can contribute to technical projects, quickly learn new systems, and collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary engineering environments.

Job description

Alexander Dennis is a global leader in the design and manufacture of double-deck and lightweight buses. Building on 130 years of heritage, we're leading the transition to zero-emission mobility, with 3,000 zero-emission buses sold to date. Alexander Dennis is a subsidiary of NFI Group, aย leader in propulsion agnostic bus and coachย mobility solutions. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving real-world technical problems, working closely with manufacturing teams, and gaining deep product knowledge. It also offers an excellent opportunity for long-term growth within Alexander Dennis, with many team members moving into broader engineering and product development roles after gaining experience in Build Support.

WHY JOIN US:

  • Be a part of a team leading the world's electrification of mass mobility
  • Competitive Wages and comprehensive benefit package with immediate benefit eligibility
  • Paid holidays and vacation
  • 401K with generous company match
  • Inclusive workplace culture that values and empowers team members.
  • On-the-job training in a continuous learning environment (we invested $15.9 million in 2024)
  • Advancement opportunities within our family of companies

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Extensive hands-on experience troubleshooting electrical and electronic systems within the automotive, commercial vehicle, bus, heavy equipment, transportation, manufacturing, or related industries.
  • Demonstrated experience working with CAN Bus networks, J1939 communications, multiplexing systems, and vehicle electrical architectures.

  • Ability to perform thorough root cause analysis using engineering documentation, schematics, diagnostic data, and other technical tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Experience using electrical diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Experience supporting vehicle commissioning, programming, validation, or functional testing activities.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues and solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple priorities with limited day-to-day supervision.
  • Comfortable collaborating with globally distributed teams across North America and the United Kingdom.
  • Continuous improvement mindset focused on quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Requirements

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

  • Technical education, apprenticeship training, diploma, degree, or equivalent experience is considered an asset; however, extensive hands-on industry experience will be given greater consideration than formal educational credentials.
  • Minimum three years of engineering, technical support, or troubleshooting experience within the automotive, commercial vehicle, heavy equipment, manufacturing, or related industries
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical and electronic systems in a production or service environment
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation
  • Knowledge of vehicle communication networks, CAN bus systems, multiplexing, or J1939 protocols
