Position Overview

The Engineer I role is an entry-level engineering position requiring 0–5 years of related experience and an accredited Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

This position is responsible for applying engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications to support the design and construction of power-related systems. The Engineer I will assist with estimates, develop design options, prepare construction specifications, and support construction and maintenance teams.

This role provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working closely with internal departments, contractors, and plant operations teams.


Key Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering principles and established design criteria to power-related systems
  • Support preparation of cost estimates and material take-offs
  • Develop design alternatives and assist in engineering analysis
  • Prepare construction specifications and documentation
  • Provide guidance, oversight, and quality assurance reviews for approved contractors
  • Review contractor-developed design solutions, cost estimates, and construction packages
  • Transmit construction packages and support associated specifications
  • Estimate materials required for projects
  • Support construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations
  • Assist in development and maintenance of system design standards and criteria
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and Southern Company design standards
  • Promote and maintain a strong safety-first work environment

Knowledge & Technical Competencies

  • Understanding of planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance processes
  • Familiarity with engineering design practices and work processes
  • Basic knowledge of discipline-specific engineering software applications
  • Ability to interpret and apply design standards and specifications
  • Introductory engineering knowledge with foundational analytical skills
