What is a computer engineer?

A computer engineer designs, researches, tests, and develops computer equipment and software such as circuit boards, chips, routers, and application programs. Computer engineers analyze complex equipment and systems to understand the best way to improve it. They create new types of information technology devices and use logic and reasoning to hone in on goals, test assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems. Engineers often work in teams and have to be able to communicate with other types of engineers, including non-technical team members. Computer engineers make sure that components fit together properly and function according to the latest software developments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer engineer?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and hardware/software design, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as C/C++ or Python), circuit design tools, and industry certifications like CompTIA or Cisco are highly valuable. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that set top performers apart. These abilities ensure that computer engineers can design, implement, and optimize systems that meet technical requirements and business goals.

What are common challenges computer engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Computer engineers often collaborate with software developers, hardware designers, and project managers, which can present challenges in aligning technical requirements and communication styles. Ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of system limitations and integration points is crucial, as miscommunication can lead to project delays or rework. Staying adaptable and proactively clarifying expectations helps computer engineers navigate these collaborative environments successfully.

What is the difference between Computer Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectComputer EngineerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering or related field; certifications like Cisco, CompTIABachelor's in Computer Science or Software Engineering; certifications like Microsoft, AWS
Work EnvironmentDesigning hardware, embedded systems, and software integration in labs or officesWriting, testing, and maintaining software applications in offices or remote setups
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, manufacturing, telecommunications, embedded systemsIT firms, software companies, startups, enterprise software development

Computer Engineers focus on both hardware and software systems, often working on embedded systems and hardware integration. Software Developers primarily create and maintain software applications. While their roles overlap in programming, Computer Engineers have a broader scope including hardware design, whereas Software Developers specialize in software solutions.

Job description

Computer Programmer / PLC & HMI Programmer

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Computer Programmer / PLC & HMI Programmer to join our team. This position will be responsible for developing, modifying, documenting, and troubleshooting industrial machine-control programs, with a strong emphasis on PLC ladder logic, HMI development, and customer technical support.

The ideal candidate is comfortable taking information from electrical schematics and project documentation, turning concepts into functional control programs, and working independently while keeping the team informed of progress.

Required Qualifications

  • Skilled in PLC ladder logic programming, including:
    • Reviewing electrical schematics to identify and document I/O points.
    • Creating and maintaining spreadsheets containing I/O and related machine information.
    • Taking information from electrical documentation, project requirements, and concepts and developing it into a functional, running PLC program.
  • Must be familiar with Allen-Bradley PLC programming software and ladder logic.
  • Experience with FactoryTalk View SE HMI software.
  • Familiarity with RSView32 and older operator-interface/HMI software packages.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong technical documentation skills and the ability to clearly document programming changes, troubleshooting, and project work.
  • Good judgment, courtesy, and common sense when working with machinery, machine operation, and electrical/mechanical components.
  • Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Must be a self-starter who can be given a project, work independently to move it forward, and communicate progress to the team.

Technical Support Responsibilities

Technical support experience is highly desirable. This position may involve working directly with customers to resolve machine and programming issues, including:

  • Connecting to customer systems remotely to assist with troubleshooting.
  • Making program updates and modifications remotely.
  • Troubleshooting and debugging PLC, HMI, and machine-control issues.
  • Communicating professionally and courteously with customers while diagnosing and resolving technical problems.
  • Identifying the cause of machine issues and implementing practical solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

The following skills and experience are desirable but not required:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Visual Studio VB.NET.
  • Experience with Visual C/C++ or related programming languages.
  • Experience with website scripting and web-development technologies, particularly:
  • Java/JavaScript
  • HTML
  • PHP
  • Familiarity with Windows servers.
  • Understanding of computer networking hardware, terminology, topologies, and communication protocols.
  • Experience working with industrial automation systems, machine controls, or manufacturing equipment is a plus.
  • What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who combines strong programming and technical skills with practical problem-solving ability. The successful candidate will be able to understand how a machine is intended to operate, translate that understanding into reliable software, troubleshoot problems methodically, and communicate effectively with both customers and coworkers.

If you are a hands-on programmer who enjoys solving real-world machine-control problems and can take a project from documentation and concept through programming, testing, troubleshooting, and completion, we would like to hear from you.
