Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW: Internships usually begin the end of May through early September. Mueller Sports Medicine (MSM) looks for candidates that are academically strong with a passion for their field of study. MSM provides opportunities for internships in marketing, innovation, purchasing, logistics, information technology (IT), finance and accounting, or customer service. An intern can expect to virtually and/or in-person meet with associates, vendors, customers to explore future career opportunities. If the intern chooses to take the internship for credit, MSM is willing to accommodate any recordkeeping or evaluation requirements. This specific internship provides hands-on experience in packaging design, development, and optimization within the sports medicine industry. As a Packaging Engineering Intern, you will collaborate with our team of experienced professionals to support the development of packaging solutions for our diverse range of products.
POSITION FUNCTIONS*
50% Package Design and Optimization
• Complete an assigned project requiring planning, research, prototyping, evaluation, presentation of findings and recommendations to Executive team.
• Support the design and development of packaging solutions for new and existing products.
• Contribute creative ideas to enhance user experience and reduce costs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to support packaging initiatives throughout the product lifecycle.
10% Material Research and Testing
• Conduct research on packaging materials and technologies to identify potential options for product packaging.
• Assist in material testing and analysis to evaluate performance, durability, and sustainability.
10% Regulatory Compliance Support
• Learn about regulatory requirements governing packaging in the sports medicine industry.
• Assist in ensuring that packaging designs comply with relevant standards for safety, labeling, and environmental sustainability.
30% Documentation and Reporting
• Assist in maintaining accurate documentation of packaging specifications, test results, and compliance records.
• Prepare reports and presentations to communicate project updates, findings, and recommendations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Completed two years of post-high school education and enrolled for the fall semester at a technical college or four-year university. Pursuing a bachelor's degree in a packaging engineering, mechanical engineering, field of study related to the area of the internship.
• Have a grade point average sufficient to be considered in good academic standing.
• Strong interest in packaging design, development, and innovation within the consumer goods or medical device industry.
• Ability to understand and comply with Mueller Safety Systems and current regulatory requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Previous work experience or internships in the field or a related field of the internship.
• Basic knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and regulatory requirements is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the team member is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills; ability to stand or sit, bend or stoop, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light weights of up to 20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate office equipment and read. The team member frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. Position requires frequent typing. Position may require limited local business travel.
