You may also support senior engineers by conducting research, documenting technical processes, or contributing to prototype builds and experiments. Interns often participate in team meetings and may be asked to present findings or project updates. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to real-world engineering workflows and helps you build both technical and professional skills.

Software Engineering Intern

TimberSync, Lexington, KY

Schedule: Part-time or full-time, 20-40 hours/week

Duration: Approx. 320 hours total, flexible pacing between August 24 and December 11, 2026 (exact schedule based on candidate availability)

About TimberSync

TimberSync is a fast-moving tech startup in Lexington's growing innovation scene, and a rare chance to get in early with a small team building something new. We move quickly, ship often, and are reshaping how a traditional, overlooked industry uses data and technology to make smarter decisions.

About the Role

As a Software Engineering Intern at TimberSync, you'll work directly with our engineering team to build and improve the software and data tools that power our platform, including geospatial and mapping features, data pipelines, and internal tools used to serve customers across the timber industry. You'll get hands-on experience with real-world software development, from writing and testing code to working with production data, in a small, fast-moving startup environment where your work ships quickly and has direct impact.

What You'll Do

  • Contribute to features and tools within TimberSync's software platform
  • Work with real data pipelines and geospatial/mapping functionality
  • Collaborate directly with engineers on active projects, not just shadow work
  • Help test, debug, and improve existing tools and systems

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on software development experience in a live production environment
  • Exposure to geospatial data and mapping technology
  • Direct mentorship from a small, experienced engineering team
  • A real sense of ownership and visible impact from your contributions

Qualifications

  • Enrolled full-time at the University of Kentucky, Transylvania University, or Bluegrass Community and Technical College
  • Within two years of completing your degree
  • Coursework or project experience in software development, computer science, or a related field
  • Comfortable learning new tools and working in a small-team environment
