Job description

The CAD Drafter is responsible for preparing, revising, and maintaining construction drawings and technical documentation supporting the Second Avenue Subway Tunnel Project. Working closely with project engineers, construction engineers, surveyors, field personnel, and project management teams, this position develops detailed CAD drawings, construction plans, shop drawings, as-built drawings, and technical exhibits required for the successful execution of complex underground transit construction activities.

The ideal candidate will possess strong drafting and technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to support multiple project stakeholders in a fast-paced heavy civil construction environment. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate and timely production of drawings that support tunnel construction, utility relocations, temporary works, traffic maintenance, and project coordination efforts.


Responsibilities


  • Prepare, revise, and maintain detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for tunnel construction, temporary works, utilities, structural elements, traffic control, and site logistics plans.
  • Develop construction drawings, shop drawings, as-built drawings, sketches, and technical exhibits in accordance with project requirements and engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with project engineers, field engineers, designers, surveyors, and construction personnel to ensure drawing accuracy and constructability.
  • Incorporate engineering markups, design revisions, RFIs, and field changes into project drawings.
  • Assist with the preparation of tunnel sequencing drawings, excavation support plans, utility relocation drawings, and construction staging plans.
  • Coordinate drawing revisions and maintain drawing registers and revision logs.
  • Review drawings for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with project specifications and standards.
  • Support field operations by providing drafting support for work plans, presentations, submittals, and technical documentation.
  • Prepare quantity takeoff exhibits, construction phasing drawings, and permit support drawings as required.
  • Coordinate with survey teams to incorporate field data into project drawings.
  • Maintain electronic filing systems and document control procedures for CAD drawings and technical documents.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of as-built records throughout project execution.
  • Support project teams in preparing owner, consultant, subcontractor, and stakeholder submittals.
  • Ensure all drafting activities comply with project quality standards, document control procedures, and client requirements.


Qualifications


  • Associate's degree or technical certification in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Architecture, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of CAD drafting experience in construction, civil engineering, transportation, infrastructure, or related industries.
  • Experience supporting heavy civil, tunnel, rail transit, bridge, utility, or transportation projects preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD required.
  • Experience with Civil 3D, MicroStation, Revit, or BIM software preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Familiarity with surveying data, utility coordination, and construction layouts preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical drawings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Experience working on public agency projects such as MTA, NYCDDC, NYSDOT, Port Authority, or similar transportation agencies preferred.
  • Knowledge of tunnel construction, underground structures, utility systems, or transit infrastructure is a strong plus.
  • Experience supporting large-scale rail or transit projects is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with BIM coordination, design-build delivery methods, and document management systems preferred.
