In this role, your job duties include designing assembler language programs, developing the assembler language code, and troubleshooting the software program to resolve any issues. The qualifications needed for a career as a computer assembler include a bachelor’s degree in computer science or software engineering. To advance in this career, you may need a master’s degree. You also need strong technical skills and a firm knowledge of computers. There are certifications available in various programming languages that can improve your job outlook.

What does a computer assembler do?

Computer Assemblers are technicians who build, install, and test computer hardware components such as motherboards, processors, memory, and drives. They follow detailed instructions or blueprints to assemble computers and ensure that each component functions correctly. Their work may involve troubleshooting hardware issues, installing operating systems, and performing quality checks before the computers are shipped or used. Computer Assemblers are essential in manufacturing plants, repair shops, and organizations that require customized computer systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer assembler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Assembler, you need strong knowledge of computer hardware components, assembly procedures, and basic electronics, typically supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with tools such as anti-static wrist straps, screwdrivers, diagnostic software, and adherence to safety protocols is essential. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to follow technical instructions are key soft skills that help ensure quality and efficiency. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable computers that meet specifications and function correctly, minimizing errors and rework.

What are some typical challenges a computer assembler might face during the assembly process, and how can they be addressed?

Computer Assemblers often encounter challenges such as handling delicate components, diagnosing hardware compatibility issues, and ensuring all parts are installed correctly. Attention to detail and following precise assembly instructions are crucial to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance. Collaborating with quality control teams and staying updated on the latest hardware trends can help Assemblers quickly identify and resolve issues, resulting in smoother workflow and higher-quality builds.

This is a hands-on opportunity for a mechanically skilled professional who enjoys precision work, troubleshooting, and seeing complex equipment come together.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble complex packaging machinery and options from drawings, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Fit, align, adjust, and verify components within required tolerances; confirm final alignment before shipment.
  • Inspect starting materials and assembled parts, identify shortages or defects, and communicate issues promptly.
  • Install mechanical systems such as chains, pulleys, gearboxes, pneumatic components, regulators, and air lines.
  • Use hand and light power tools, calipers, micrometers, scales, and other measuring devices safely and accurately.
  • Troubleshoot build issues and partner with Engineering, Planning, Fabrication, and Production to resolve them.
  • Follow safety, personal protective equipment, 5S, and continuous-improvement requirements; maintain an organized work area.
  • Support training and increasingly complex machine builds based on demonstrated skill level.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ year of mechanical assembly, industrial maintenance, field service, or related hands-on experience.
  • Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, manuals, and written work instructions.
  • Working knowledge of basic shop math and precision measuring tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, use ladders, work at heights up to 25 feet, and squat or sit for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Trade-school training in mechanical assembly, machining, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with packaging machinery, pneumatics, tight-tolerance assembly, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, or machine rebuilds.
  • Experience with material requirements planning software and basic computer transactions.

Level Placement
Placement from Level I through Senior is based on relevant experience and demonstrated capability. Higher levels require independent completion of increasingly complex W18, W25, W630, option, cup-machine, or rebuild work, along with technical leadership and training responsibilities.
Additional Details
  • Full-time, non-exempt position based 100% onsite in Rialto, California.
  • Schedule and shift will be confirmed during the recruitment process; overtime may be required based on business needs.
  • Travel is generally not required.
  • Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with noise, moving equipment, flying debris, temperature changes, and required personal protective equipment.
