A computer-aided drafter uses CAD (computer-aided design) software to convert rough sketches and specifications completed by architects and engineers into technical drawings or schematics. These can then be viewed in 3D to aid in the completion of a project. A design can be for architecture, microchips, bridges, water control systems, and much more. Responsibilities in this job include using your knowledge of correct construction or engineering techniques to add details to architectural plans. You also specify dimensions, building or product materials, and relevant procedures for products while working under supervision. Other drafting positions available to specialize in include civil, where your duties involve preparing topographic maps; electrical and electronics, where you prepare wiring diagrams to wire things like power plants and circuit boards; and mechanical drafters, where you work to arrange layouts for machinery and tools for products like medical equipment.
