Job description

Job Overview

The Senior Associate Design Engineer is responsible for the development of new products and the enhancement of existing products, including high-voltage bushings. This role involves close collaboration with customers, suppliers, and cross-functional internal teams, such as marketing, engineering, and operations, to ensure that the company's key performance metrics are achieved.

The successful candidate will create and maintain detailed 3D models and engineering drawings, as well as develop and analyze Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models to support product design, validation, and optimization efforts. The Design Engineer will contribute throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development through production support.

A Day In The Life
  • Execute assigned new product development projects for high-voltage bushings and related products
  • Design standard and engineered-to-order products, including performing electrical, mechanical, and thermal calculations, and preparing, reviewing, and approving engineering drawings and design documentation
  • Develop detailed 3D models and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models to evaluate mechanical, thermal, and electrical performance using commercial CAD and analysis software
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to technicians during electrical testing and other assigned product validation tests
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, including root cause and failure analysis conducted independently or jointly with customers, and prepare detailed electronic technical reports
  • Participate in factory process reviews and propose, present, and help implement initiatives focused on cost reduction and productivity improvements
  • Collaborate with vendors on component design, material selection, and the evaluation of new materials
  • Work directly with customers via video conference, email, phone, or through the Marketing team on specification reviews, product recommendations, and troubleshooting of testing or performance issues
  • Travel domestically and internationally to visit customer sites, factories, facilities, and substations as required
  • Deliver technical presentations to customers, both remotely and in person at customer locations
  • Participate in national standard meetings and represent the company in professional organizations such as IEEE and CSA
  • Collaborate with corporate teams on strategic initiatives, including Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field, required
  • 1-2 years of relevant professional experience, required
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player while also performing independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated analytical capabilities and strong technical writing skills; examples of completed work or reports are a plus
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
  • Proficiency in working with both English and metric units interchangeably
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) and analysis software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar tools is preferred
  • Fundamental understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) theory and underlying mathematics

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel for business-related activities on a limited basis
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English
  • Ability to work on a personal computer and other standard office or engineering-related equipment
  • Ability to walk and stand on the manufacturing shop floor for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds as required for activities such as part inspection, fit checks, and product testing
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs and ramps safely within office, manufacturing, and customer facility environments
  • Hands-on experience with FEA software such as ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, Inventor, COMSOL, or similar tools is required, with demonstrated examples of prior work
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%, both domestically and internationally, occasionally on short notice

** Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications and will be in the range of $72,900 - $91,600. This position offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
