CAD Operator I Location: Naperville, IL (Hybrid ) Contract- 3 Years Client- Nicor Gas Job Summary The CAD Technician I is an entry-level drafter responsible for producing foundational 2D basemaps and plan sheets to support gas distribution and transmission projects. This role will learn and apply Nicor Gas drafting standards, contribute to drawing packages, and provide the groundwork for more complex design work. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates who want to build their career in the utilities industry and gain exposure to gas distribution and transmission design projects. Job Requirements Education
  • Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field (required).
Experience
  • 2+ years preferred of drafting experience, preferably in the gas utility field.
  • Open to recent graduates with strong foundational skills.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D basics.
  • Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings, schematics, and maps.
  • Familiarity with GIS, GIS data formats (DWG, SHP), and coordinate systems.
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D or Inventor is a plus but not required.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to work with engineers and senior CAD designers.
Major Job Responsibilities
  • Develop basemaps from GIS exports, aerial imagery, survey data, and other sources for gas distribution and transmission projects.
  • Create foundational drawing sets following project requirements.
  • Apply drafting standards such as symbols, line types, text styles, and annotations for accurate and consistent drawing packages.
  • Collaborate with engineers and senior CAD designers to understand project scope, resolve drafting issues, and ensure accuracy.
  • Support the redline review process to ensure compliance with DOT standards and utility requirements.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of CAD standards, drafting tools, and best practices across the department.
  • Perform additional duties and assignments as required to support project and departmental objectives.
