What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Aided Design Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, attention to detail, and coursework or experience in CAD software. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and sometimes knowledge of 3D modeling or technical drawing standards, is typically required. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork abilities help you collaborate effectively and adapt in a professional environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing accurate designs, supporting project goals, and growing professionally within a technical team.

What types of projects and tasks can a Computer Aided Design Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include creating and modifying 2D or 3D models, preparing technical drawings for engineering or architectural teams, and assisting with design revisions based on feedback. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced designers and engineers, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard CAD software. The work environment is typically fast-paced and supportive, with opportunities to contribute to real-world projects, participate in team meetings, and learn about the project lifecycle from concept through production.

What is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern?

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) Intern is a student or entry-level professional who assists engineering or architectural teams by creating, modifying, and managing technical drawings and models using CAD software. Their main responsibilities often include supporting design projects, updating existing drawings, and learning industry standards. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience with design tools and processes, helping prepare interns for full-time roles in engineering, architecture, or related fields.

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, including the ability to produce clean, well-organized 2D plan sets.
  • Plan Types: Demonstrated experience drafting grading and SWM plans, site development plans, road/utility profiles, and/or plats.
  • Technical Literacy: Ability to read and interpret engineering sketches, redlines, and survey data to produce permit-ready drawings.
  • Documentation: Experience maintaining drawing revisions and version control within a structured project filing system.
  • Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience drafting for Maryland jurisdictions (PG County DPIE, Montgomery DPS, MDE, SHA, WSSC, etc.).
  • Familiarity with stormwater management design standards and sediment & erosion control requirements.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D (not required but a plus).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with engineers and agency reviewers.

What We Offer

  • Onsite role at our Greenbelt, MD office
  • Paid time off including vacation, holiday, and sick leave
  • Benefits: 401K
