Overview
The School Nurse is responsible for promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of students and staff within the school environment. This role provides essential nursing services, including health assessments, first aid, emergency care, and management of chronic conditions, while also serving as a critical liaison between families, healthcare providers, and school personnel.
Responsibilities
  • Health Assessments & Clinical Care:
    • Conduct initial health screenings and assessments for new and returning students.
    • Provide first aid and emergency care as needed, including managing injuries, allergic reactions, and other acute health issues.
    • Monitor and manage chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy, ensuring that students receive appropriate care during school hours.
  • Medication Administration & Management:
    • Safely administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with individual care plans and legal requirements.
    • Maintain accurate medication records and ensure proper storage and documentation.
  • Health Education & Promotion:
    • Develop and implement health education programs that promote wellness, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices among students and staff.
    • Provide individual and group health education sessions as needed, including guidance on hygiene, nutrition, and mental health.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents to develop and implement individualized healthcare plans, including 504 plans and IEPs.
    • Act as a liaison between the school and community healthcare providers, facilitating communication and coordinating care for students with special health needs.
    • Maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns and progress.
  • Record Keeping & Compliance:
    • Maintain confidential health records in accordance with legal, ethical, and school policy guidelines.
    • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding school health services, including immunization and health screening requirements.
  • Emergency Preparedness:
    • Develop, update, and implement emergency response plans related to student health crises.
    • Participate in school emergency drills and training sessions to ensure readiness for various health emergencies.
Qualifications
  • Education & Certification:
    • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
    • Certification in Pediatric Nursing or School Nursing is a plus.
    • Current CPR/BLS certification; additional certifications in First Aid and AED usage preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in pediatric or community nursing; experience in a school or educational setting is highly desirable.
    • Familiarity with managing chronic health conditions and administering medications in a school environment.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong clinical assessment and emergency response skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive health information with discretion.
    • Capacity to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Posted Salary Range
Starting from USD $78,000.00/Yr.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to run short distances and move swiftly in response to student needs, including bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Ability to lift and assist students with mobility challenges, often requiring the handling of up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Skill in managing fine motor tasks, such as helping students with writing, manipulating small objects, or using adaptive devices.
  • Ability to operate a computer or tablet for up to 8 hours daily.
  • Capacity to remain calm and composed during physically and emotional demanding situations, ensuring student safety and well-being
