Computational Research Assistant information

What is a computational research assistant?

Computational Research Assistants are professionals who support scientific and academic research projects by applying computational methods, programming, and data analysis techniques. They often work with researchers to develop models, run simulations, analyze large datasets, and assist in the interpretation of results. Their work is essential in fields such as biology, physics, social sciences, and engineering, where complex data and computational tools are required to conduct research. Typically, they have strong skills in programming languages like Python, R, or MATLAB, and possess a background in the relevant scientific discipline.

How does a computational research assistant typically collaborate with principal investigators and other team members during a research project?

Computational Research Assistants often work closely with principal investigators (PIs), postdoctoral researchers, and other team members to design, implement, and analyze computational experiments. They are responsible for developing scripts, managing datasets, and ensuring the reproducibility of results. Regular meetings and progress updates are common, and assistants are expected to communicate findings clearly and troubleshoot technical issues collaboratively. This role requires both independent initiative and a strong team-oriented approach to meet research objectives efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computational research assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computational Research Assistant, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, and a background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Familiarity with data analysis tools, version control systems (such as Git), and experience using high-performance computing environments or relevant software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help you collaborate with research teams and interpret complex results. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing accurate, reliable research outcomes and supporting innovative scientific investigations.

What is the difference between Computational Research Assistant vs Data Analyst?

Job description

We are looking for a motivated, talented, and energetic computational designer to join our team in Miami. The team focuses on exciting cruise terminal and maritime infrastructure projects across the globe, combining architecture, engineering, and urban design in a single collaborative workspace.

This is a full-time position based in Miami. We particularly welcome designers who can create beauty from functionality and rationality, with a strong focus on the user experience to deliver infrastructure that stands the test of time. We are seeking a candidate to contribute at a design level across multiple projects, ideally with at least 2 years of experience. Candidates with prior experience in infrastructure projects (particularly transport projects) will stand out. Proficiency in Rhino and Grasshopper is strongly preferred.

As the computational team is newly established, this is a great opportunity for ambitious candidates to grow alongside the team within a global company like B+BA. The role offers the chance to take on as much responsibility as desired, providing room for meaningful career development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop parametric and computational models to support design exploration across cruise terminal and maritime infrastructure projects
  • Contribute design-level work across multiple concurrent projects, from concept through design development
  • Produce high-quality 3D models, renderings, and visualizations using Rhino/ Grasshopper.
  • Translate complex functional and infrastructural requirements into elegant, user-focused design solutions
  • Prepare presentation materials, drawings, and graphics using Adobe Creative Suite for client and internal reviews
  • Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, and urban designers within a single integrated workspace
  • Support design coordination across disciplines, helping ensure design intent carries through technical development
  • Assist with research, precedent studies, and design documentation as needed
About You

To be considered for the role, you should demonstrate:

  • Degree and Masterโ€™s in Architecture (or similar)
  • At least 2 years of professional experience
  • Confidence in dealing with complex 3D modelling, with attention to detail
  • Excellent people skills, including communication, presentation, and report writing
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage deadlines
  • A collaborative mindset, with initiative and a desire to be challenged

In addition, the ideal candidate will:

  • Share our passion for great infrastructure and align with our practice ethos
  • Possess strong design skills, creating strong and bold architectural concepts
  • Be proficient in relevant software, including Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Have experience with BIM โ€” a plus, but not mandatory
Salary & Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package commensurate with experience
  • Paid time-off, health insurance, 401K plan
  • Professional development opportunities and support for licensure
  • Hybrid work with 3 days in office (subject to change in the future)
